Yakima Coffeehouse Poets Shine Spotlight on Local Talent
The Yakima Coffeehouse Poets (YCP) have launched a monthly poetry column, showcasing the creative voices of poets from Central Washington. Established in 2014, this nonprofit organization aims to celebrate poetry and its enthusiasts, providing a platform for local talent to share their work. The column appears on the first Saturday of each month, featuring selections from the YCP open mic events and annual poetry contest submissions.
YCP has become a vital part of the cultural fabric in Yakima, fostering a community where poetry thrives. The organization’s commitment to promoting local poets not only enriches the literary landscape but also encourages artistic expression among residents.
Highlighting Unique Voices
This month’s featured poem, titled “Self-Authoring Soul,” reflects the complexities of modern existence and the search for authenticity in a world saturated with superficiality. The poet, known simply as Angel, articulates the challenges of navigating life amidst a barrage of distractions and societal pressures.
The poem opens with a stark depiction of isolation:
“It can get echoingly lonely in the hall of mirrors amid the kaleidoscopic waltz of plastic packaging the strobing light of smart-devices…”
Angel’s words resonate with many who feel overwhelmed by the rapid pace of contemporary life. The imagery evokes a sense of disconnection, as the poet grapples with the relentless influences of consumerism and technology.
As the poem unfolds, it contrasts this sense of alienation with a glimmer of hope. Angel writes about discovering “a self-authoring soul” hidden within the chaos, suggesting that creativity can emerge even in the most unlikely places.
Connecting Through Creativity
The Yakima Coffeehouse Poets aim to create a space where voices like Angel’s can be heard and appreciated. By featuring local poets, YCP not only highlights diverse perspectives but also fosters a sense of community among poetry lovers.
The organization encourages aspiring writers to participate in their open mic events, providing a supportive environment for individuals to share their work. This initiative empowers poets to connect with one another and with audiences, cultivating a vibrant artistic community in Central Washington.
