Braden Smith Shines in No. 41 Jersey During Big Ten Final
In a surprising turn of events during the Big Ten Tournament Championship on March 12, 2023, Purdue’s senior guard Braden Smith took to the court wearing a No. 41 jersey instead of his usual No. 3. This unexpected change captured the attention of fans and commentators alike as the game unfolded at the United Center in Chicago.
Initially, the reason for the jersey switch remained unclear. However, social media soon began to buzz with images and updates about the incident. Smith, after missing several shots, expressed his frustration in a dramatic fashion by tearing his jersey down the middle. Public address announcer Gene Honda officially announced the change to No. 41, allowing play to continue.
Frustration Fuels Performance
Following the game, Smith explained his actions, attributing the jersey rip to a buildup of frustration over recent performances. “I ripped it fully with both hands like Superman style,” he said. “I was really frustrated. A lot of misses these past four games, and I was really frustrated because I put a lot of time and work in. When you do see the results, it gets to you.” Rather than directing his frustration towards others, he channeled it into tearing his jersey.
Smith’s emotional release proved to be a turning point. Following the incident, he stepped up his game, scoring 14 points, delivering 11 assists, and grabbing five rebounds. His performance was pivotal in leading the Boilermakers to an 80-72 victory over the Michigan Wolverines and securing the Big Ten Tournament title. In recognition of his outstanding performance, he was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player.
Chasing History and Future Prospects
Smith’s performance also placed him on the cusp of history. He is now just one assist away from tying the NCAA record held by Bobby Hurley. With the first-round NCAA Tournament game against Queens on the horizon, Smith is poised to achieve this milestone. Fans are left wondering whether he will don the No. 3 jersey or stick with No. 41, which he jokingly suggested might have contributed to his success on Sunday.
In the wake of this memorable game, The NIL Store quickly capitalized on the unique situation, announcing the availability of a No. 41 jersey for sale on their website. Although Smith wore the No. 41 jersey only once in an emergency, it has now become a talking point among fans and collectors alike.
As the Boilermakers prepare for their upcoming matchup, all eyes will be on Smith and the jersey he chooses to wear. Whether he opts for the No. 3 or continues with No. 41, his performance in the Big Ten Championship will undoubtedly be remembered as a defining moment in his collegiate career.
