Vera Mae Walter, a cherished member of the Bethany, Missouri community, passed away on March 11, 2026, at the age of 93. Born on September 25, 1932, in rural Harrison County, she dedicated her life to family, friends, and community service, leaving behind a legacy of love and resilience.

Vera was the daughter of Roberta Hoyt Shoemaker and Earnie Shoemaker. Following her parents’ divorce in her youth, she, alongside her mother and sister Lois Shoemaker Smith, lived in a modest home south of Bethany, supported by her maternal grandmother, Maimie, and Maimie’s husband, Sam Webber. Weekly trips to town for selling cream and eggs were part of her childhood routine, which also included occasional trips to the movies.

Vera’s academic journey began at a rural elementary school before she graduated early from Bethany High School at the age of 16, sharing the milestone with her sister Lois. Following high school, she took on various roles within the community, including working as a bank teller at the Bethany Trust Company Bank. It was there that she met her future husband, Harold (Joe) Walter. The couple married on May 25, 1952, and welcomed three sons: Greg, Chris, and Doug.

Raising three active boys kept Vera engaged in numerous community activities. She often mentioned how Joe would come home asking, “Who went to the emergency room today?” as a testament to their lively household. In addition to her role as a mother, she assisted in Joe’s State Farm Insurance office, working until her sons returned from school. Vera actively supported her children’s interests, attending little league baseball games and school football matches, and serving as a Cub Scout den mother.

After Joe’s retirement, the couple enjoyed spending winters in southern Texas, where they made lifelong friends. Joe passed away on November 18, 1998, but Vera remained a pillar in the Bethany community. She continued her involvement with local organizations such as the VFW and the American Legion, and remained active in the Bethany United Methodist Church. An avid quilter, Vera created numerous beautiful quilts, earning accolades at the Northwest Missouri State Fair.

In her later years, Vera faced health challenges, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. Her son Chris provided weekly food drop-offs, while her brother Dan assisted with home repairs and transportation. In late November 2022, she moved into Crestview, a nursing facility in Bethany, where she resided next to her sister Lois.

Vera is survived by her three sons: Greg Walter and his wife Becky, Chris Walter and his wife Andrea, and Doug Walter and his wife Debbie. She leaves behind her sister Lois Smith and brother Dan Robertson, along with several other family members, including brothers Fred and Larry Shoemaker. Vera was predeceased by her brother Randy Shoemaker.

Her legacy also includes seven grandchildren: Kendall Walter Fox, John Spence, Taylor Walter, Spencer Walter, Hattie Walter Steffens, Peter Walter, and Sam Walter, as well as eight great-grandchildren.

Funeral services for Vera Mae Walter will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 19, at Roberson Funeral Home in Bethany. Burial will follow at Miriam Cemetery in Bethany, with the family receiving friends from 1:00-2:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorial contributions can be made to the Bethany United Methodist Church or the Leukemia Society, directed to Roberson Funeral Home, P.O. Box 46, Bethany, MO 64424.
