Seattle Fire Department Reflects on a Year of Service and Growth
The Seattle Fire Department (SFD) marked a significant year in 2025, highlighting various operational responses, community initiatives, and the challenges faced throughout the year. In a recent message, Chief Harold Scoggins detailed the department’s activities, emphasizing its commitment to both local and out-of-state emergency responses.
In January, SFD deployed personnel to Los Angeles to assist in wildfire response efforts. This marked a notable example of inter-agency collaboration aimed at addressing large-scale emergencies. Alongside this deployment, the department introduced several new tools and equipment to enhance operational capabilities. Key updates included the addition of a third rescue watercraft and significant upgrades to fire stations, which featured new fitness equipment and rescue swimmer wetsuits. These enhancements were funded by the Seattle Fire Foundation.
Chief Scoggins also acknowledged the department’s ongoing community engagement through recruitment and internal recognition programs. The recent fall firefighter/EMT hiring cycle saw a substantial increase in applications, reflecting the community’s interest in supporting local emergency services. In a poignant moment, Scoggins remembered Firefighter/Paramedic Larry Doll, who passed away unexpectedly, expressing gratitude for the community’s continued support during challenging times.
Community Initiatives and Training Successes
The Seattle Fire Department celebrated the graduation of seven firefighter/paramedics following a rigorous nine-month training program. Chief Scoggins emphasized the importance of these new recruits in expanding the department’s service capabilities. He noted that SFD has significantly increased its focus on overdose response initiatives. The establishment of a Post Overdose Response Team and the operation of a pop-up clinic providing long-acting injectable buprenorphine demonstrate the department’s commitment to addressing the ongoing public health crisis. Additionally, SFD partnered with various organizations to support a recovery center, showcasing a collaborative approach to community health.
The department also held patient reunions, allowing individuals to reconnect with the firefighters and paramedics who responded to their emergencies. These events fostered a sense of community and provided a platform for gratitude and recognition.
Operational Challenges and Community Safety
Throughout 2025, the Seattle Fire Department faced operational challenges, including dealing with a series of arson fires in the Columbia City neighborhood. Chief Scoggins highlighted these incidents as part of the department’s ongoing efforts to ensure public safety. The investigation into these arsons reflects SFD’s dedication to maintaining a secure environment for all residents.
As the year drew to a close, the Seattle Fire Department reflected on its achievements, which included service expansions, emergency responses, and deeper community engagement. The department’s initiatives not only underscore its operational effectiveness but also highlight its commitment to serving the community in diverse and impactful ways.
In summary, the Seattle Fire Department’s activities in 2025 illustrate a year of growth, resilience, and dedication to public service, culminating in a stronger connection with the community it serves.
