Ukraine Invites Trump to Visit, Seeking Peace and Ceasefire

Ukrainian officials are urging former President Donald Trump to become the first world leader to visit Ukraine since Russia’s invasion in February 2022. They believe his presence could prompt Moscow to pause hostilities and pave the way for a potential peace agreement. During a recent interaction with reporters following a summit with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Trump expressed willingness to visit Kyiv to advocate for a plan aimed at ending the ongoing conflict.

President Zelensky emphasized the significance of Trump’s potential visit, stating, “As for President Trump’s proposals or signals that he is ready to address the Ukrainian parliament and be in Ukraine, I think that it will be useful if President Trump can come.” He further noted, “I told him that, please, we would be glad to see him.” The visit could also serve as a platform for Trump to promote a formal peace plan that would require ratification by the Ukrainian parliament or a public referendum.

High-Stakes Visit Could Signal Change

Zelensky suggested that a direct flight from the United States to Kyiv, rather than the more common train journey from Poland, would send a powerful message about U.S. commitment to Ukraine. “If President Trump, the president of the United States of America, flies to Ukraine — and it is desirable that he flies to Ukraine by plane, not to Poland and then travel by train — then this will indicate that you and I definitely have the opportunity to count on cease-fire,” he explained.

Ukrainian officials are optimistic that Trump’s visit could deter Russian aggression during his stay, making it more difficult for Moscow to launch attacks while the American leader is present. In previous instances, brief pauses in fighting have coincided with visits from U.S. officials, including Special Presidential Envoy Keith Kellogg. Some Ukrainians have humorously depicted Kellogg in memes as a saintly figure protecting the city during his trips.

Zelensky also mentioned ongoing discussions among Ukrainian, American, and European officials, with some meetings likely to occur in Kyiv in January 2024. A temporary cessation of hostilities during Trump’s potential visit could provide Ukraine with the necessary time to hold a referendum on its proposed 20-point plan for peace. This plan is seen as crucial for establishing a lasting resolution to the conflict.

The Challenge of a Referendum

While Zelensky expressed openness to ratifying the peace plan through parliamentary approval, he warned that the Kremlin may reject any agreement reached this way. Russia has consistently opposed the idea of a referendum, preferring that Ukraine adopt any peace provisions unilaterally.
