Kino Lorber Acquires Argentine Drama ‘The Currents’ for North America
Kino Lorber has secured the North American distribution rights for The Currents, a psychological drama directed by Argentine filmmaker Milagros Mumenthale. The film, which is Mumenthale’s third feature, premiered at the Toronto Film Festival (TIFF) this year, showcasing in the festival’s Platform section.
The narrative follows Lina, portrayed by Isabel Aimé González Sola, an accomplished Argentine artist and designer who experiences a traumatic near-drowning incident while accepting a prestigious fashion award in Switzerland. This life-altering event haunts her upon returning home, leading to a profound aversion to water and a gradual unraveling of her life. The film explores themes of fear, shame, and trauma, offering a nuanced character study that resonates deeply.
Critical reception has been highly positive. In a review for The Hollywood Reporter, Jon Frosch praised The Currents as “an uncommon mix of stylistic rigor and feeling,” highlighting its potential to elevate Mumenthale’s profile among cinephiles and arthouse distributors. Frosch noted the film’s surprising quality is its “generosity,” avoiding cheap thrills or moralizing.
Kino Lorber plans to release The Currents in theaters in 2026, followed by a multiplatform launch. “We’re thrilled to bring Milagros Mumenthaler’s assured third feature to North American audiences,” stated Karoliina Dwyer, Vice President of Acquisitions at Kino Lorber. Dwyer negotiated the deal with Jennyfer Gautier, Head of Sales at Luxbox. She added, “The combined power of Mumenthaler’s exceptional filmmaking and Isabel Aimé González Sola’s impeccable performance is cinema we are proud to champion.”
Produced by Alina Film and Ruda Cine, The Currents stands as a testament to Mumenthale’s vision and craftsmanship, promising to engage audiences with its thoughtful exploration of complex emotional landscapes. The anticipation surrounding its North American release underscores the growing interest in international cinema and the importance of diverse narratives in contemporary film.
