British rapper Ghetts, known for his role in the Netflix series Supacell, appeared in a London court following a fatal hit-and-run incident. The rapper, whose real name is Justin Clarke-Samuel, has been charged with causing death by dangerous driving. This stems from an accident on Saturday, October 18, 2023, when his vehicle allegedly struck 20-year-old Yubin Tamang in east London.
In a brief court appearance on Monday, Ghetts confirmed his name, date of birth, and address before being remanded in custody. He is scheduled to return to the Old Bailey, London’s main criminal court, on November 24, 2023. The court proceedings have attracted significant media attention due to Ghetts’ prominence in the music industry.
Musical Career and Recent Success
At 41 years old, Ghetts is recognized as a leading figure in the grime music scene. He has received nominations for prestigious awards, including the Mercury Prize and BET Awards. His collaborations with renowned artists such as Ed Sheeran and Stormzy have further solidified his status in the industry. In 2021, he won the award for best male act at the Music of Black Origin Awards, commonly known as the Mobo Awards in the UK.
In 2024, Ghetts earned the Mobo Pioneer Award in recognition of his significant contributions to British Black culture. His role as the icy villain Krazy in the Netflix series Supacell has also drawn international acclaim. The series debuted to massive viewership, becoming the most-watched show on Netflix at its release, amassing 179.6 million hours viewed globally from June to December last year. The show, which has been renewed for a second season, focuses on a group of young Black individuals in south London who unexpectedly acquire superpowers.
The ongoing legal situation adds a complex layer to Ghetts’ public persona. Fans and followers of his work are now left to grapple with the implications of these serious charges. As the court date approaches, the music community and the public await further developments in this high-profile case.
