Berlin EFM 2026 Showcases Star-Studded Lineup and Global Buzz
The Berlin International Film Festival’s European Film Market (EFM) is set to highlight an impressive lineup of films featuring stars such as Sydney Sweeney, Charli XCX, and Ethan Hawke. As the first major film market of the year, the EFM serves as an important indicator of indie industry sentiment and international purchasing power. The event, taking place in February 2026, aims to surpass the volume of previous years with its focus on new projects and package deals.
The market, hosted in prestigious venues like the Grand Hyatt, Ritz-Carlton, and Adlon hotel suites, is renowned for its bustling atmosphere, where global pre-sales significantly outnumber domestic deals. This year, films featuring talents such as Chris Hemsworth, Brie Larson, and Zoe Saldana are generating substantial buzz, reflecting the growing strength of international films, particularly in the wake of this year’s Oscar race.
New Projects Generate Anticipation
Several standout projects are already capturing attention ahead of the EFM. Among them is the period drama directed by Paweł Pawlikowski, known for his Oscar-winning films such as Ida and Cold War. This new film stars Sandra Hüller and follows a poignant road trip in 1949 Germany, focusing on Nobel Prize-winning writer Thomas Mann and his daughter, Erika. The film is poised to attract significant sales interest from The Match Factory.
Anime continues to thrive in the global market, with Yoshitoshi Shinomiya‘s feature-length debut expected to draw buyers. Following his experience as an assistant director on the hit film Your Name, Shinomiya’s story about a boy launching a mythical firework is positioned to capitalize on the ongoing anime boom.
Other notable projects include an auteur Western from Dara Van Dusen, starring Johnny Flynn and John C. Reilly, and a supernatural thriller directed by Luke Piotrowski, featuring Karen Gillan and Clive Owen. The latter is described as a mix of The Exorcist and Training Day, following a rookie priest’s harrowing mission to conduct an exorcism.
Market Dynamics and International Impact
The EFM is expected to facilitate bidding wars and domestic pick-ups, as many films in the official competition arrive without U.S. deals. This scenario underscores Berlin’s role as a crucial marketplace for indie films, where international buyers are keen to discover unique narratives.
The festival is also showcasing films that have gained traction in the awards circuit. Titles such as Sentimental Value, It Was Just an Accident, and Sirat have collectively earned 13 Oscar nominations, demonstrating their crossover potential. These films, emerging from the once-niche arthouse sector, illustrate a significant shift towards global storytelling that resonates with audiences worldwide.
As the EFM 2026 approaches, the excitement surrounding diverse projects continues to build, reflecting a vibrant industry eager to embrace new voices and narratives. With its rich array of films and star power, this year’s market promises to be a pivotal moment for filmmakers, buyers, and audiences alike.
