BREAKING: The newly remodeled Ogdensburg International Airport officially opened on October 17, 2023, marking a significant $25 million investment aimed at re-attracting Canadian travelers. This urgent upgrade comes as rural airports in New York seek to revitalize local economies and enhance the travel experience for visitors.

Officials from New York state and the North Country celebrated the renovations, which include a modern entrance, upgraded ticketing counter, enhanced security measures, a spacious waiting room, improved baggage claim, and a community area. “It’s everything from check-in, all the way to getting on the plane,” said Charlie Garrelts, Airport Manager, emphasizing the focus on convenience and comfort for all travelers.

Of the total renovation cost, $18 million was funded by New York state, part of the larger $230 million Upstate Airport Economic Development and Revitalization Competition. The aim is to highlight the importance of rural airports, demonstrating that they can deliver an impactful travel experience comparable to larger facilities.

“This space is a true gem in the North Country,” Garrelts remarked. “It’s the idea I want people to see when they come in to see this airport; it’s ‘wow, this is in the North Country.’”

Despite the renovations, airport officials report a decline in Canadian bookings this year, with revenue dipping as fewer travelers cross the border. “Canadians are always our partners and friends,” Garrelts stated. “Getting them to use our facility and spend local dollars in the U.S. is crucial for our community.”

Officials hope the airport’s redesign will rekindle interest among Canadian travelers, especially as they prepare for upcoming flight options. Currently, Breeze Airways offers flights from Ogdensburg to Washington, D.C., and Raleigh-Durham, N.C.. Starting in February 2024, the airline will introduce flights to Orlando, coinciding with the busy spring break travel period.

“We really appreciate Canadians and we appreciate their business,” said Steve Lawrence, Executive Director of the Ogdensburg Bridge and Port Authority. “Nothing has changed as far as how we feel about all the Canadians that come over here.”

With the renovations complete, Ogdensburg Airport stands ready to welcome travelers and re-establish its role as a key transit point for those crossing from Canada. As airport officials stress the importance of this relationship, the hope is that the upgraded facilities will entice Canadian visitors to return, fostering economic growth and community engagement.

Stay tuned for updates on travel trends and passenger responses as Ogdensburg International Airport embarks on this new chapter.
