Urgent Alert: 10 Risky Foods Linked to Foodborne Illness Revealed
URGENT UPDATE: A new analysis from Consumer Reports has identified the 10 foods most commonly linked to foodborne illness in 2024. As we approach the holiday season, consumers are urged to be vigilant about their food choices, especially concerning items like deli meats, raw milk, and soft cheeses.
Food safety expert Rosalee S. Hellberg, Ph.D., warns that these foods present significant risks. Among the top culprits are cucumbers, onions, organic carrots, and leafy greens. Leafy greens, in particular, are notorious for their tendency to harbor pathogens due to their large surface area, which can come into contact with contaminated water or soil.
The report highlights alarming statistics: 26 illnesses, 23 hospitalizations, and 2 deaths linked to foodborne illnesses caused by cotija and queso fresco cheeses this year. “Soft cheeses are riskier because they retain moisture, creating a breeding ground for Listeria monocytogenes,” Hellberg explains. The shorter aging process of these cheeses means pathogens may not be effectively eliminated.
While fruits were not listed among the riskiest foods, Hellberg cautions that items like melons and berries can still carry harmful pathogens such as salmonella or listeria. As Halloween approaches, she emphasizes the dangers of homemade treats, which may not be properly sanitized, and the importance of refrigerating dairy or egg-based items.
Food producers can mitigate risks through safe irrigation, composting practices, and strict sanitation protocols. Facilities are legally required to follow Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs) to ensure food safety.
To protect themselves, consumers are advised to:
– Thoroughly wash all produce
– Cook meats, eggs, and seafood to safe internal temperatures
– Avoid raw dairy and undercooked meats
– Check expiration dates and storage instructions
– Keep cold foods cold and hot foods hot
– Use separate cutting boards for raw and cooked items to prevent cross-contamination
As foodborne illnesses can have serious consequences, staying informed and practicing safe food handling is crucial. Share this urgent update with friends and family to ensure everyone stays safe this holiday season.
