Jane Goodall, 91, Dies from Cardiac Arrest; Legacy Lives On
UPDATE: Renowned primatologist Jane Goodall has died at the age of 91, with her death attributed to cardiopulmonary arrest, according to a death certificate obtained by TMZ. The certificate also notes that she had epilepsy, although it is unclear if this condition contributed to her passing.
The news of her death was first announced by the Jane Goodall Institute on October 1, 2025, stating, “Dr. Jane Goodall DBE, UN Messenger of Peace and Founder of the Jane Goodall Institute has passed away due to natural causes.” Goodall was in California at the time, engaged in her speaking tour across the United States.
Cardiopulmonary arrest leads to a sudden loss of heart function, depriving the body’s organs of essential oxygenated blood. According to the Cleveland Clinic, survival rates are grim, with only about 1 in 10 people surviving cardiac arrest outside a hospital.
Goodall’s impact on science and conservation is immeasurable. Her groundbreaking work began in 1960 when she traveled to Tanzania at just 26 years old to study chimpanzees. She famously transformed our understanding of these creatures and their emotional complexity, profoundly shifting the narrative around human-animal relationships.
Reflecting on her work, Goodall once stated, “What the chimps have taught me over the years is they’re so like us. They’ve blurred the line between humans and animals.” This perspective helped bridge the gap between humans and the animal kingdom, fostering a deeper appreciation for wildlife conservation.
In response to her passing, many are pledging to continue her mission. The Jane Goodall Institute has called on supporters to honor her legacy by advocating for the protection and restoration of natural habitats worldwide.
As tributes pour in from around the globe, Goodall’s legacy as a pioneering ethologist and passionate advocate for the environment is set to inspire future generations. Her voice will resonate in the ongoing fight for wildlife conservation and the ethical treatment of animals.
