LAPD Police Dog TAKES DOWN Suspect After 4-Hour Standoff
UPDATE: A dramatic standoff in Los Angeles ended with a police canine tackling a suspect who allegedly fired at an LAPD helicopter. The incident unfolded on November 20, 2023, lasting nearly four hours, sparking significant police response and raising public concern.
At approximately 1:30 p.m., the LAPD’s 77th Street Patrol Division responded to reports of a man with a gun in the area. A helicopter from the Air Support Division quickly arrived, where tactical officers observed 57-year-old Anthony Whitsey firing three to five rounds at the hovering aircraft.
Authorities report that the tactical flight officer immediately called for backup as officers on the ground were directed to Whitsey’s location. Upon arrival, they found him allegedly holding a firearm in his front yard, refusing commands to drop the weapon. An officer-involved shooting ensued, causing Whitsey to drop his gun but remain uncooperative.
As the confrontation escalated, additional officers deployed less-lethal rounds, prompting Whitsey to retreat into his residence. In response, the LAPD’s canine unit and Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) personnel were called in to contain the situation.
In a striking video released by the LAPD, the canine can be seen tackling Whitsey around the 16:28 mark, ultimately leading to his apprehension. After being bitten by the police dog, Whitsey was taken into custody and transported to a local hospital for treatment of minor injuries.
Whitsey has since been booked for assault with a deadly weapon on a police officer. The LAPD recovered the firearm used in the incident, which has been secured as evidence.
As investigations continue, this incident highlights the volatile nature of police encounters and the risks law enforcement faces daily. The LAPD has yet to release further details regarding the ongoing inquiry.
