Jonathan Frakes Hopes for More Star Trek After Season Two Wrap
UPDATE: Production on the second season of Starfleet Academy has just concluded, leaving fans in suspense about the future of the Star Trek franchise. With no new Star Trek series officially in production, questions swirl around whether this will be the last time Jonathan Frakes directs for the iconic series.
As the franchise marks its 60th anniversary, the absence of confirmed new projects is striking. While fans eagerly await news about a potential third season of Starfleet Academy, uncertainty looms following the recent merger of Paramount with Skydance. The timing of announcements is unclear, especially with significant milestones like First Contact Day on April 5 and Star Trek Day on September 8 approaching.
Despite this limbo, multiple seasons of Strange New Worlds are already filmed, and a new Star Trek movie directed by John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein is in the pipeline. Yet, the lack of an active production feels unusual for a franchise that has thrived in the streaming era since the debut of Discovery nearly a decade ago.
In an interview with TrekMovie, Frakes expressed his hope for continued involvement in the franchise he loves. “That’s the last Star Trek I directed,” he reflected on a recent episode titled “300th Night.” His legacy extends beyond acting as Will Riker, having directed episodes across recent series, including Discovery and Picard.
Frakes remains optimistic about the future, stating, “I am an eternal optimist. I’m not ready to start looking back.” He added, “Why not?” in response to the idea of returning on-screen. Fans are rallying behind his sentiment, hoping for fresh announcements from Paramount soon.
As the Star Trek universe adapts to new leadership under the merged Paramount and Warner Bros., the future remains uncertain but filled with potential. With key dates approaching and Frakes’ hopeful outlook, fans are eager for updates that could reshape the trajectory of this beloved franchise.
Stay tuned for further developments as the Star Trek community anticipates exciting news in the coming months.
