Copenhagen Girls Basketball Falls to Stamford in Regional Final
BREAKING: The Copenhagen Golden Knights have just suffered a heartbreaking defeat, falling 56-46 to Stamford in the Class D regional final held at Visions Veterans Memorial Arena in Binghamton on March 15, 2026. This loss ends their season and eliminates their path to the girls basketball state tournament.
Copenhagen entered the game with a fierce determination but trailed Stamford 29-23 at halftime. The Golden Knights fought hard, narrowing the deficit to just five points with five minutes left in the fourth quarter, but Stamford maintained control and secured the victory.
This season was memorable for the Golden Knights, who finished with a record of 12-11. They were one of only two teams from Section III to earn at-large bids to the state tournament following losses in their sectional finals, with the other team being the East Syracuse Minoa boys in Class D. Last week, Copenhagen was narrowly defeated by defending state champion LaFargeville in a thrilling sectional final, finishing 49-45.
In a strategic move, LaFargeville opted to face Section X’s Chateaugay instead of Stamford in the regional final, a decision that ultimately did not pay off as they lost 42-37 in that matchup.
As the Golden Knights reflect on this season, they’ll look to the future with optimism. Juniors Halle Miller and Mollie Babcock, who were standout players, will return next year, providing a strong foundation for the team.
This loss is not only a setback for the team but also a poignant moment for the community, which rallied behind the Golden Knights throughout their journey. The emotional engagement of the fans was palpable during the game, showcasing the strong support for local athletes.
As we look ahead, the focus will shift to the upcoming season and how Copenhagen can build on this experience. The Golden Knights will be eager to bounce back and reclaim their position in the state tournament next year.
Stay tuned for more updates on Copenhagen basketball and other regional sports news as the off-season unfolds.
