Accused Oak Fire Arsonist Released with Ankle Monitor, Officials Confirm
BREAKING: The accused Oak Fire arsonist, 73-year-old Edward Wackerman, has been released from jail with an electronic ankle monitor following a court order, confirmed by the Mariposa County Sheriff’s Office on Monday night. This urgent development raises concerns in the community, especially considering Wackerman’s alleged role in the devastating fire that destroyed 127 homes in Mariposa County.
Wackerman was arrested on June 16, 2023, under grave charges including aggravated arson linked to the July 22, 2022 Oak Fire, deemed the most catastrophic incident in Mariposa County’s history by Sheriff Jeremy Briese. During a recent court hearing, it was revealed that representatives from the California Department of Justice and Wackerman’s defense team mutually agreed on his release.
In a Facebook live video broadcast, Sheriff Briese assured the public that the Sheriff’s Office will closely monitor Wackerman’s activities. “The sheriff’s office will do everything we can to be of assistance,” he stated. “We hope things like this can be reversed.” He emphasized the need for legislative changes to prevent such releases from occurring in the future, expressing frustration that the current system allows it.
The community’s apprehension is palpable as Wackerman prepares for a pre-trial hearing scheduled for January 2026. Residents are concerned about the implications of his release and the potential risk to public safety. Sheriff Briese’s office has committed to collaborating with probation services to ensure Wackerman remains under strict supervision.
As the situation develops, all eyes will be on the court’s upcoming decisions and any legislative actions that may follow. The Sheriff’s Office has vowed to keep the community informed and engaged as they navigate this complex case.
