Polk County secured a decisive 71-60 victory against R-S Central on March 14, 2024, marking a significant turnaround after a challenging six-game losing streak. The team showcased an impressive performance, particularly in the fourth quarter, which allowed them to pull away and solidify their win.

Head coach Josh Money emphasized the importance of finishing plays effectively, a sentiment echoed through the team’s performance. The Wolverines excelled at making layups, referred to by Money as “bunnies,” finishing with an impressive shooting record of 26-of-40 from 2-point range. The senior duo of Aaron Jackson and Khristian Littlejohn played pivotal roles in the game, combining for 45 points. Jackson particularly shone, scoring 33 points and setting a new school record with an 88 percent shooting rate for 2-point attempts, going 14-of-16 from the field.

Polk County (3-10) maintained the lead for most of the match, although R-S Central (2-10) remained competitive, primarily due to strong performances from their guards. The Hilltoppers managed to keep the game close, trailing just 49-45 early in the fourth quarter. However, Jackson’s relentless drive to the basket, followed by a crucial three-point play, extended the Wolverines’ lead to 54-45.

As the game progressed, R-S Central made one last effort to close the gap, reducing the deficit to six points with 3:31 left on the clock. Yet, Jackson responded with an emphatic dunk, and quick contributions from Littlejohn and Chase Stansbury, who also scored 12 points, helped ensure the win was secure.

Defensively, Polk County’s strategy included a full-court press that proved effective in disrupting R-S Central’s offense. Jackson and Littlejohn’s tenacity in harassing the Hilltopper guards contributed to the team forcing multiple turnovers. Money noted the success of this approach, recalling how it had worked well in a previous game against Madison, where the team created several turnovers early on.

Looking ahead, Polk County will shift their focus back to conference play, with plans to travel to Avery on March 19, 2024. With this victory, the Wolverines hope to build momentum and improve their standing as the season progresses.
