Ravens Coach Calls for Clarity on NFL Catch Rule After Loss
Baltimore Ravens head coach John Harbaugh has expressed frustration over the NFL’s catch rule following a controversial call in the team’s 27-22 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers on December 10, 2023. The game saw a pivotal moment when a touchdown by tight end Isaiah Likely was overturned, leaving Harbaugh seeking clarification from league officials.
During the fourth quarter, Likely appeared to catch a 13-yard pass from quarterback Lamar Jackson, which would have given the Ravens a one-point advantage with just under three minutes remaining. Initially ruled a touchdown, the call was reversed after Joey Porter Jr. of the Steelers knocked the ball loose before Likely completed the necessary steps to secure the catch.
According to Mark Butterworth, the NFL’s vice president of instant replay, a player must complete “an act common to the game,” such as taking a third step, for a catch to be valid. This rule is outlined in Rule 8, Section 1, Article 3, which states that a forward pass is complete when a player secures control of the ball and performs specific actions, including maintaining control long enough to make a play.
Harbaugh reached out to Perry Fewell, the NFL’s senior vice president of officiating administration, to discuss the overturned call, along with another controversial decision involving Travis Jones. The Ravens coach stated, “It didn’t clear anything up,” referring to the explanations provided by the league regarding both decisions.
The loss dropped the Ravens to 6-7, placing them one game behind the Steelers in the AFC North standings with only four weeks remaining in the season. When asked if the overturned touchdown contributed to the defeat, Harbaugh remarked, “You never know what cost you the game.”
In addition to the overturned touchdown, Harbaugh highlighted a misjudged penalty against Jones, which occurred during a Steelers field goal attempt. The penalty allowed the Steelers to score a touchdown instead of a field goal, adding four points to their total. Harbaugh noted that the league later acknowledged the mistake, stating that Jones’s contact did not warrant a penalty, as it did not involve the head or neck area.
As the Ravens prepare for their next matchup, the focus will be on addressing these officiating concerns and improving their performance on the field. The discussions around the catch rule and officiating decisions are likely to continue, as teams and fans alike seek clarity in a game where every point counts.
