Paul Pierce: Draymond Green Deserves to Retire as a Warrior
The debate surrounding Draymond Green and his future with the Golden State Warriors has intensified, particularly as the team strives to reclaim its championship status. While some fans advocate for the franchise to part ways with the four-time NBA champion, former player Paul Pierce argues that Green has earned the right to finish his career with the Warriors.
Golden State has faced challenges in recent seasons, struggling to replicate the success it enjoyed during the late 2010s. Green’s emotional playstyle has often led to controversy, with incidents such as his recent altercation with head coach Steve Kerr and his ejection for two technical fouls against the Utah Jazz. While these moments might have been overlooked during the team’s dominant years, they now raise questions about Green’s impact on the current roster.
Pierce emphasizes that the Warriors perform better with Green on the court. His fellow teammate, Butler, echoed this sentiment after a recent victory against the Jazz, stating, “No, no, no, no, no. We need 23 out there.” This acknowledgment highlights Green’s critical role in the team’s dynamics, despite ongoing concerns about his behavior.
Despite the calls for the Warriors to consider trading Green, Pierce believes that the franchise should not squander Stephen Curry‘s final playing years. He cautioned against making rash decisions based on recent emotional outbursts. “You knew who he was from day one,” Pierce said during the No Fouls Given podcast. “This is who he’s been. This is how you’ve won. But when things aren’t going well, you start looking at the little things.”
Reflecting on past seasons, Pierce pointed out how Green was blamed when Kevin Durant left the team, with many attributing the end of the Warriors’ dynasty to his influence. However, after the team clinched the championship in 2022, those criticisms faded. As the Warriors face difficulties once again, the scrutiny of Green’s contributions has resurfaced.
In most cases, franchises might choose to move on from a player with a history of controversy. Yet, Green’s significant contributions to the Warriors’ success grant him a unique standing. “He’s entitled to stay there,” Pierce remarked. “They’re probably going to build a statue of Draymond. You take him with the good and the bad. During the good years, it was cool. Let him roll.”
Pierce firmly believes that Green has earned the right to remain with the Warriors for as long as he desires. Should Green express an interest in exploring other options, that conversation could shift. Nevertheless, it seems likely that as long as Curry remains a Warrior, Green will continue to be a vital part of the team’s fabric.
