Ohio State’s Caleb Downs Prepares for Crucial Cotton Bowl Showdown

Ohio State safety Caleb Downs is stepping into his sixth College Football Playoff (CFP) game as the Buckeyes gear up for a quarterfinal clash against the Miami Hurricanes at the Cotton Bowl. Downs, who transferred from Alabama, is leveraging his extensive playoff experience to guide younger teammates through the high-pressure atmosphere of this critical matchup.

In Arlington, Texas, Downs reflected on his journey, which includes a freshman debut with Alabama that ended in a narrow overtime loss to Michigan. With Ohio State, he has since celebrated significant postseason success, including four playoff victories and a national championship last season. “That could be a positive, just knowing that I’ve been in this situation so many times,” Downs stated. “At the end of the day, it’s not about me. It’s about everybody else feeling confident during the game.”

As the third-ranked Buckeyes prepare for the game scheduled for December 20, 2023, they face No. 10 Miami, who are making their first-ever CFP appearance after a first-round victory against Texas A&M. Meanwhile, Ohio State received a bye in the first round following a loss to top-ranked Indiana in the Big Ten championship.

Freshman Devin Sanchez, a backup cornerback, expressed his admiration for veterans like Downs, admitting that he relies on their experience to navigate the jitters leading up to the game. “Lean on them a lot, more than you think,” Sanchez noted. “As a new guy, there’s nothing I can do but lean on them. The speed will be a little different. The intensity will be up a little bit more.”

Downs recalled the nerves he felt during his CFP debut in the Rose Bowl, a moment he had dreamed of as a child. “That was probably the biggest game I had played at the time,” he said, having led Alabama in tackles as a freshman. Now, he returns to the Cotton Bowl, looking to replicate the success he enjoyed last season when Ohio State defeated Texas 28-14 in the semifinals.

Defensive coordinator Matt Patricia praised Downs for his professionalism and preparation, which serve as a model for the team. “The amount of experience he has playing football is probably the most important thing,” Patricia remarked. Downs, projected to be a first-round pick in the upcoming NFL draft, is not alone in his experience. Starting cornerbacks Davison Igbinosun and Jermaine Matthews Jr. also bring valuable playoff experience to the field.

Reflecting on his past playoff experiences, Downs acknowledged that losing during his freshman year fueled his determination to excel. “It definitely added a little bit of fuel to the fire because I lost my freshman year,” he said. “It made me want to come back and play better. I think that was a lot of what everybody else on the team felt because they didn’t have the success they wanted to earlier in their career.”
