Mississippi State University has decided not to retain defensive coordinator Coleman Hutzler for the upcoming season. Instead, the Bulldogs are reportedly considering a reunion with former head coach Zach Arnett to take over as the new defensive coordinator, according to information from ESPN’s Pete Thamel.

The potential return of Arnett, who previously served as the Bulldogs’ defensive coordinator from 2020 to 2022, would mark a rare instance of a former head coach resuming a role within the same program. During his tenure at Mississippi State, Arnett established himself as a leading defensive strategist in the Southeastern Conference (SEC). His defenses consistently ranked in the top five within the conference for total defense, rushing defense, and takeaways over three seasons.

Arnett stepped in as head coach after the passing of Mike Leach in December 2022. However, he faced challenges during the 2023 season, leading the team to a record of 4-6 before being relieved of his duties with two games remaining. Following his departure from Mississippi State, Arnett spent the last two seasons working as an analyst at Ole Miss and Florida State.

Hutzler, who joined Mississippi State as defensive coordinator in 2024, has struggled to improve the team’s defensive performance. The Bulldogs ranked last and second to last in both yards allowed and points allowed per game over the past two seasons. This lack of success appears to have prompted the university to seek a change in leadership for the defensive unit.

The decision to pursue Arnett reflects Mississippi State’s desire to bolster its defensive strategy and improve upon recent performances. As the Bulldogs look ahead to the new season, the potential return of a familiar face may provide the boost the program needs to regain its competitive edge in the SEC.
