Five-Star Recruit Lamar Brown Delays Signing with LSU
Five-star defensive tackle Lamar Brown, the top-ranked prospect in the nation, has postponed his signing with Louisiana State University (LSU), leaving many questions about his future. According to information provided by ESPN, Brown was not expected to sign during the early signing period that commenced this week. After a meeting with members of the LSU coaching staff on Tuesday, he decided to wait until new head coach Lane Kiffin finalizes his coaching staff.
On Wednesday, further discussions took place between Brown’s representatives and the LSU staff, sparking some optimism about a potential signing later this week. Despite those conversations, a definitive resolution was not reached, leading to uncertainty regarding whether Brown will extend his recruitment process beyond the early signing period, which concludes in late December.
Current Commitments and the Impact of Delays
Brown’s postponement comes at a pivotal moment for Kiffin and the Tigers. While LSU managed to secure nine commitments as the early signing period began, they currently rank No. 14 in ESPN’s class rankings for the 2026 cycle. Notable commitments included three-star wide receiver Brayden Allen and two former Ole Miss commits: tight end J.C. Anderson and center Ryan Miret. Additionally, four-star pass-catcher Corey Barber, who decommitted from Ole Miss on November 30, signed with the Tigers on Wednesday morning.
The Tigers also retained a significant commitment from Brysten Martinez, a top 100 offensive tackle who has been with LSU since February. Despite his commitment, Martinez chose to remain with LSU after visiting Texas last month.
Brown is not alone in delaying his signing. As of Wednesday evening, only cornerback Havon Finney Jr. and safety Aiden Hall had officially signed with the program. Four of the Tigers’ seven ESPN 300 commits remain unsigned. Among them, defensive tackle Deuce Geralds, ranked No. 39 overall, indicated he is committed to LSU but plans to “make a final decision” by the end of the day on Friday. In a statement, Geralds expressed that he initially intended to sign but opted to take additional time to understand the new coaching staff better.
Coaching Changes Create Uncertainty
Lingering questions about the LSU coaching staff are reportedly influencing Brown’s decision to delay his signing. He has developed strong relationships with several LSU coaches, including defensive coordinator Blake Baker and interim coach Frank Wilson, both of whom have uncertain futures with the program. Kiffin confirmed on Monday that Wilson will remain in his interim role through the bowl season.
As LSU navigates these recruitment challenges, the future of their 2026 class hangs in the balance, with the outcome largely dependent on the decisions of top recruits like Brown. With Kiffin at the helm, the Tigers are poised to make significant moves as they finalize their coaching staff and solidify their commitments.
