Arlene Beth Antonovich Harrison, a cherished member of the San Pedro community, passed away peacefully in her sleep on March 10, 2024, at the age of 89. She was preceded in death by her husband, Claude K. Harrison, who died in 2018, and her brother, Carl Antonovich, who passed away earlier this year.

A Lifelong Legacy in San Pedro

Known affectionately as Nene to family and friends, Arlene dedicated her life to her community and her Croatian heritage. She proudly represented her family’s fishing roots, with her father, Carl Antonovich, and grandfather, John Antonovich, who immigrated from Korcula in 1907. Arlene was not only a passionate environmental activist but also an accomplished artist and chef.

As a member of the San Pedro Art Association, she enjoyed painting coastal landscapes en plein air from her ocean-view beach house. Her artistic talents extended to her culinary skills, as she was known for her Croatian seafood dishes, particularly her famous hobotnica (octopus salad), which delighted guests at her many dinner parties.

Arlene’s love for the ocean was evident in her upbringing of her four sons. She taught them how to swim at Cabrillo Beach, fostering a lifelong connection to the sea that they would pass down to their children and grandchildren. Summer vacations spent on Catalina Island became cherished family traditions, filled with laughter and memories.

A Celebration of Life and Community Impact

Arlene’s beach house on Bluff Place served as the backdrop for numerous family gatherings, including Fourth of July fireworks, Christmas Eve feasts, and birthday celebrations. Her nurturing spirit extended to her sons’ friends, who felt welcomed and cared for as part of the family.

She is survived by her sons: Robb (Debbe) Heberer, Craig (Teresa) Heberer, Karl (Julie) Heberer, and Chris (Maria) Heberer. Arlene leaves behind a legacy of love through her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, including Heidi (Chris) Linscomb, Megan Wescott, Molly (Matt) Dragich, and many others. Her family also includes stepsons Chris Harrison and Brian (Felicity) Harrison.

A private Celebration of Life is being organized for immediate family and close friends, honoring her wishes. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the San Pedro Boys and Girls Club, where her sons spent countless afternoons engaged in sports and activities, or to the San Pedro Art Association, reflecting Arlene’s commitment to nurturing future generations.

Arlene Antonovich Harrison’s impact on her community and family will be felt for years to come, as she leaves behind a rich heritage of love, art, and environmental stewardship.
