Teamsters Leadership Challenge: Members Rally Against O’Brien
The leadership of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters faces a significant challenge as members mobilize to unseat General President Sean O’Brien. In the wake of controversial political alliances with figures such as former President Donald Trump, discontent has surged among rank-and-file members. Veteran Teamsters Richard Hooker Jr. and John Palmer have launched campaigns under the “Fearless Slate” to reclaim the union’s direction ahead of the upcoming elections in November 2026.
O’Brien’s approach has been characterized by a confrontational stance, which he has framed as “Teamsters vs. Everybody.” Critics argue that this mentality has compromised the union’s integrity, especially given O’Brien’s endorsements of right-leaning politicians who are perceived as anti-labor. Members have expressed frustration over what they see as a betrayal of the union’s core mission to protect workers’ rights.
Hooker, who has spent 26 years with the Teamsters, currently serves as Secretary-Treasurer of Local 623 in Philadelphia. He emphasizes the need for leadership that prioritizes the interests of all members rather than aligning with politicians who undermine labor rights. “What are we going to do about the decisions that have put not just the Teamsters in harm’s way, but all of the working class?” Hooker asked during a recent interview. His candidacy aims to restore accountability and transparency within the union.
Palmer, with 38 years of experience in the Teamsters and currently a vice president at large, echoes Hooker’s sentiments. He believes that the union must move away from a corporate-style approach to labor and re-engage with the grassroots members. “Our members are struggling. They’re having a hard time,” Palmer noted, pointing to issues such as layoffs and inadequate healthcare coverage. He argues that the union should act as a community support system, addressing not just workplace grievances but also the broader challenges members face in their lives.
Rallying for Change
The Fearless Slate represents a significant shift in the Teamsters’ political landscape. Members are encouraged to participate in the electoral process actively, as Hooker and Palmer seek to reinvigorate the union’s commitment to workers’ rights. They advocate for a return to the union’s roots, where solidarity and collective action were paramount.
Their campaign emphasizes the importance of rejoining the AFL-CIO, which they believe would strengthen the union’s position in the broader labor movement. “We need our brothers and sisters from the SEIU, IBEW, and others to move in the same direction,” Hooker stated, underscoring the need for unity among labor organizations.
The upcoming elections are not just about leadership; they represent a larger struggle for the future of the Teamsters. Members must confront the realities of aligning with politicians whose policies often contradict the union’s values. The endorsement of Greg Abbott in Texas, a governor known for anti-labor stances, has drawn particular ire from within the ranks. “You can’t curry favor with someone who consistently undermines labor,” Palmer remarked, reflecting the sentiments of many Teamsters who feel abandoned by current leadership.
As the November elections approach, both candidates stress the necessity of communicating with fellow members about the stakes involved. They urge Teamsters to vote their conscience and consider the implications of their choices for the future of the union.
A Call to Action for Teamsters
The Fearless Slate is rallying support for a vision of the Teamsters that prioritizes workers’ needs above political expediency. Hooker and Palmer encourage all members to engage in the electoral process, emphasizing the importance of their voices in shaping the union’s direction.
“Voting is your right and responsibility,” Hooker declared. “If you believe in democracy, vote for it.”

The future of the Teamsters depends on the collective will of its members to reclaim their union from those who would prioritize political alliances over the rights and livelihoods of working people.
