Remembering Mary Skroch Grogan: A Life of Travel and Dedication
Mary Skroch Grogan, who passed away on February 24, 2021, left a significant legacy as a devoted family member and a passionate dog breeder. Born on December 20, 1929, in Independence, Wisconsin, she was the youngest of three children in her family, raised by Simon Skroch, a local Postmaster and tenor, and Lucy Zilla, an active community member.
Mary’s early life was marked by her involvement in music; she played the trombone in her high school band and earned recognition for her talents. After graduating from Independence High School, she attended the University of Wisconsin at Eau Claire. Following her studies, Mary embarked on a career as a stewardess with Eastern Airlines, a role that allowed her to travel extensively.
In 1954, she married Stanley J. Grogan Jr. in Washington, D.C., marking the beginning of a partnership that would span decades. The couple lived in Europe, where they continued to travel throughout Europe and the Far East, enriching their lives with diverse experiences and cultures.
A Passion for Poodles and Community Involvement
Mary became a well-known breeder of Standard Poodles through her kennel, Yardcastle Kennels, a venture she dedicated over 60 years to. She regularly exhibited her dogs at shows regulated by the American Kennel Club, where she achieved numerous awards and titles in both obedience and conformation categories. Her commitment to her canine companions showcased not only her love for the breed but also her competitive spirit.
Beyond her professional endeavors, Mary was known for her vibrant personality, characterized by her sense of humor and keen fashion sense. Her daughter, Elder Mary M. Grogan of Sausalito Presbyterian Church, expressed the profound impact her mother had on her life, stating, “She was my North Star, my guide and my amazing support. She will be deeply and sorely missed.”
Mary’s family connections extended beyond her immediate household. She is survived by her husband, Colonel Stanley J. Grogan Jr., and her daughter, along with numerous nieces and nephews across several states, including North Dakota, Arizona, and California.
A Lasting Memory and Legacy
Mary was preceded in death by her parents and siblings, including her sister Florence Skroch Karasch and brother Robert Skroch. The enduring love her family shared is evident in the heartfelt tributes that celebrate her life and contributions.
As the fifth anniversary of her passing approaches, Mary Skroch Grogan is remembered not only for her accomplishments but also for the warmth and joy she brought into the lives of those around her. Her legacy, marked by dedication to family and passion for her pursuits, continues to inspire those who knew her.
In honor of her memory, friends and family are encouraged to plant a living memorial or send flowers, keeping her spirit alive in their hearts and communities.
