Oi Shiba to Relocate to Convoy Street, Expanding Ramen Offerings
Oi Shiba, a popular ramen restaurant based in San Diego, is set to relocate to 4428 Convoy Street, Suite 120. This move comes as the restaurant prepares to occupy the former site of Da Nang Corner, as indicated by a recent liquor license application. While an official opening date has yet to be announced, the new location will enable Oi Shiba to reach a broader audience.
Known for its innovative Japanese-inspired dishes, Oi Shiba will continue to serve its signature ramen bowls, including White Shiba, Red Shiba, Black Shiba, and Veggie Shiba. The menu also features popular side dishes such as takoyaki, karaage, and yubu bites, all crafted to enhance the dining experience.
The restaurant originally opened in Pacific Beach at 909 Grand Avenue and quickly gained a following for its cozy atmosphere and focus on ramen. The name “Oi Shiba” reflects both the Japanese term for “delicious” and the Shiba Inu dog breed, encapsulating the brand’s playful identity. After operating for about a year, the Pacific Beach location closed in July 2023, paving the way for this new chapter.
Strategic Location in a Thriving Corridor
The relocation to Convoy Street places Oi Shiba in one of San Diego’s most vibrant restaurant districts. This area has recently attracted several new tenants, including Hongdae Dakgalbi, which is set to open in early December in the space previously occupied by Nice 2 Meet U Chuan Chuan Hot Pot. The influx of new establishments suggests a growing interest in diverse dining options within the neighborhood.
Oi Shiba emphasizes quality and customization in its offerings. The menu features a variety of broths and house-made sauces, and customers can also choose from seasonal beverages like sparkling yuzu lemonade, peach lemonade, and honeydew lemonade. To cater to health-conscious diners, many dishes can be made with lighter sodium upon request, ensuring a fresher experience for all patrons.
Franklin Chou, who leads Oi Shiba, brings considerable experience to the venture, having opened and operated several dining concepts in San Diego, including Steamy Piggy and VietNom. Chou’s philosophy centers on delivering approachable Japanese comfort food, characterized by a strong emphasis on flavor and presentation.
As Oi Shiba prepares for its new location, the anticipation among ramen enthusiasts continues to grow. The strategic move to Convoy Street aligns with the restaurant’s vision of expanding its reach and solidifying its presence in San Diego’s competitive food scene.
