The Saudi Food & Drug Authority (SFDA) is transforming food safety standards in Saudi Arabia and beyond through innovative technologies and practices. According to His Excellency Dr. Hisham Saad Aljadhey, CEO of the SFDA, “As an evidence-based authority, all our regulations are grounded in scientific data, which informs our decision-making processes.” He emphasizes that by utilizing emerging technologies, including AI, the SFDA fosters a collaborative environment that enhances research and innovation. The SFDA has taken significant steps to combat food fraud, which includes the misrepresentation of food products’ origins and composition. This fraudulent activity poses a risk to consumers and can damage the reputation of producers and distributors alike. The authority’s efforts to prevent fraud began with traditional chemical analysis and have evolved significantly. In 2021, specialized laboratories were established to implement a multimethod approach, allowing for more precise evaluation of food authenticity.

One notable example is the protection of honey, a food deeply embedded in Saudi culture and health. Saudi citizens consume an average of 320 grams of honey per person annually, which is double the global average. The SFDA has developed unique fingerprints for two prized honey varieties—talh and sidr—by collecting samples from verified sources. This process combines traditional analysis with advanced chemical and physical data, such as metabolite profiles and mineral content, to create a robust reference that combats deceptive practices.

The multimethod approach extends beyond honey, with the SFDA applying sophisticated technologies like Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and nuclear magnetic resonance to detect adulteration in other staples, including milk and olive oil. These advancements enhance the precision and reliability of food safety measures.

The SFDA’s impact is not confined to national borders. After refining its internal processes, the authority is sharing its multimethod approach with neighboring countries and regions.
