New Dietary Guidelines Target Ultra-Processed Foods, Says Dr. Oz
New dietary guidelines released this year emphasize the need to reduce the consumption of ultra-processed foods while promoting protein intake and recommending a more balanced approach to fats. According to CMS Administrator Dr. Mehmet Oz, these guidelines address a long-standing issue in American dietary practices, particularly concerning the role of sugar in weight gain.
In an interview with Fox News Digital, Dr. Oz remarked, “We’ve gotten America to realize what we’ve all, in medicine, known for quite a while — you eat healthy fats, the right amount of carbohydrates, and focus on protein, you’re much better off.” He pointed out the significant impact that sugar has on obesity, stating that it is not the consumption of fat that leads to weight gain, but rather the high intake of sugary foods.
Focus on Reducing Ultra-Processed Foods
The new guidelines advocate for a substantial reduction in highly processed and refined carbohydrates such as white bread, flour tortillas, and crackers. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that nearly 15 million youths are classified as obese, and over 40% of Americans aged 20 and above are also battling obesity, based on data from August 2021 to August 2023.
Board-certified dietitian nutritionist Kendall Mackintosh, based in Bethesda, Maryland, emphasized the dangers of refined “white foods.” She explained that these foods have been stripped of vital nutrients, leading to rapid increases in blood sugar and insulin levels. Mackintosh stated, “Despite decades of low-fat dietary messaging, it is often excess refined carbohydrates and sugar — rather than healthy fats — that strongly promote fat storage in the body.”
Dr. Oz highlighted the food industry’s ongoing promotion of simple carbohydrates, warning against foods that contribute to obesity. “All the white foods, white flour, white rice, white sugar — all these tend to create obesity,” he explained. His observations reflect a broader shift in dietary recommendations aimed at improving overall health.
Implications for Public Health
The updated dietary guidelines are expected to have far-reaching implications for public health. With the CDC reporting alarming rates of obesity among both youth and adults, the focus on reducing ultra-processed foods could play a crucial role in combating these trends.
Mackintosh added that the chronic overconsumption of processed carbohydrates disrupts long-term metabolic health, which is critical for overall well-being. She noted that while healthy fats are often vilified, it is the refined carbohydrates that contribute significantly to health issues.
In a related discussion, Dr. Oz also spoke about a new initiative, the Trump RX website, which aims to provide Americans with significant savings on medications. He asserted, “It’s fair … It will save money, it will save lives,” highlighting the importance of accessible healthcare alongside improved dietary practices.
As these new guidelines begin to influence dietary habits, it remains crucial for individuals to be informed about their choices and the potential health effects of ultra-processed foods. The challenge lies in adapting to these recommendations and fostering a culture of healthy eating that prioritizes whole, nutrient-dense foods.
