The United States will automatically qualify for the baseball and softball tournaments at the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. This decision, announced by the World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC), allows the U.S. to compete alongside two other nations from the Americas based on their performance in the upcoming World Baseball Classic.

The World Baseball Classic, scheduled to take place at Dodger Stadium from July 13 to 19, 2024, will feature teams from across the Americas, including Brazil, Colombia, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Mexico, Panama, Puerto Rico, and Venezuela. The top two teams from this tournament that have not already qualified will earn berths for the Olympic Games. Major League Baseball (MLB) is optimistic that top players from its league will participate, contingent upon reaching an agreement with the Major League Baseball Players Association.

In addition to the Americas’ qualifiers, teams from Asia and Europe/Oceania will have opportunities to secure their Olympic spots through the WBSC Premier 12 tournament this November. The final qualifying tournament, which will include teams from various championships, is set to occur no later than March 2028. This tournament will feature the top two non-qualified teams from the latest Asia Championship, the European Championship, the highest-placed non-qualified team from the Africa Championship, and one from Oceania.

The Olympic softball competition will occur from July 23 to 29, 2028, at OKC Softball Park in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Qualification for this event will involve one nation from the Women’s Softball World Cup finals in April 2027, three from continental qualification events, and one from a final qualification event by no later than March 28, 2028. Each softball roster will consist of 15 players, all of whom must be at least 16 years old by the start of the Olympic year.

At the previous Olympic Games, which were postponed to 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Japan triumphed, securing gold medals in both baseball and softball. Notably, these sports were omitted from the 2024 Paris Olympics, heightening the significance of their return in Los Angeles.

As preparations for the Olympic Games continue, the U.S. baseball and softball teams look forward to showcasing their talents on an international stage, emphasizing the country’s strong legacy in these sports.
