Acclaimed Iranian filmmaker Jafar Panahi achieved a remarkable feat at the 2025 Gotham Awards, securing the prestigious titles of Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and Best International Feature for his daring drama It Was Just an Accident. The film, which was shot covertly under stringent government restrictions in Iran, highlights the resilience of independent artists in the face of oppression. The awards ceremony took place on November 27, 2025, at Cipriani Wall Street in New York City, marking the beginning of the film awards season.

While Paul Thomas Anderson‘s film One Battle After Another won Best Feature, Panahi’s triple win was the standout moment of the night. The film tells the intense story of former prisoners who kidnap a man they believe once tortured them. It has received acclaim for its raw portrayal of trauma, justice, and survival in a repressive environment.

A Victory Against the Odds

Panahi’s recognition comes amid troubling news, as he was recently sentenced in absentia to one year in prison by Iranian authorities. The director, aged 65, has faced ongoing persecution for his vocal criticism of the Iranian regime, with multiple imprisonments since 2010 for charges the government termed as “propaganda against the state.” Despite being banned from filmmaking, he has continued to produce and smuggle his works, reinforcing his status as a daring voice in cinema.

“This is not just a win for me, but for every artist who continues to tell the truth even when they’re silenced,” said Panahi during his acceptance speech, which was met with a standing ovation.

The Gotham Awards serve to highlight filmmakers with distinctive creative voices, and this year was no exception. The ceremony celebrated a diverse array of talents and critically acclaimed projects from international cinema.

Celebrating Artistic Integrity

The Best Feature award was awarded to Anderson’s One Battle After Another, a political thriller featuring notable actors such as Leonardo DiCaprio, Chase Infiniti, and Sean Penn. The film follows a former revolutionary and his daughter as they navigate a dangerous landscape with a relentless soldier pursuing them.

Other significant winners included Sope Dirisu, who received Outstanding Lead Performance for his role in My Father’s Shadow, and Wunmi Mosaku, recognized for Outstanding Supporting Performance in Sinners. The Breakthrough Director award went to Akinola Davies Jr., also for My Father’s Shadow, while Abou Sangaré was named Breakthrough Performer for his work in Souleymane’s Story.

The complete list of winners is as follows:

  • Best Feature: One Battle After Another
  • Best Director: Jafar Panahi (It Was Just an Accident)
  • Outstanding Lead Performance: Sope Dirisu (My Father’s Shadow)
  • Outstanding Supporting Performance: Wunmi Mosaku (Sinners)
