Derek Dempsey Transitions from Music to Novelist with “Anthony’s Aria”
Derek Dempsey, a multifaceted artist known for his work as a singer-songwriter and musician, has ventured into the world of fiction with the release of his debut novel, “Anthony’s Aria.” The Dublin native, who has spent 27 years in New York City, announced his transition to novelist during the launch week of his book. This latest endeavor follows his successful video podcast, “What Is America to You?”, which featured notable interviews with artists such as Don McLean and Phil Coulter.
Dempsey’s passion for writing has been a longstanding ambition. Reflecting on his early aspirations, he stated, “I have always wanted to write a novel, possibly as young as 14 years of age.” Despite facing challenges in his youth, including truancy that disrupted his education, Dempsey found his way back to writing in 2012. He began with album reviews and gradually progressed to short stories and social commentary, laying the groundwork for his novel.
Exploring the Story of Anthony
The protagonist of “Anthony’s Aria” is a complex character named Anthony, who embodies the struggles and dreams of an everyman from Dublin. He is half Irish and half Italian, with a unique talent for singing Italian opera, which he guards shyly. Dempsey describes Anthony as “a half orphan” with a grieving father, navigating his relationships while pursuing his passion for music. The narrative takes a turn when Anthony, after a night of celebration, is encouraged by a friend to enter a karaoke competition, leading to an unexpected discovery by an Irish-American employee of the Metropolitan Opera.
Dempsey elaborates on the character’s journey, stating, “Anthony becomes the most famous opera singer in the world, though the clash between his simple innocence and the sophisticated world of opera is where the story begins.” This juxtaposition serves as a central theme in the novel, reflecting both personal and cultural dynamics.
Characters and Inspirations
While Anthony is not autobiographical, Dempsey has infused elements of his own experiences into the narrative. He has crafted a rich tapestry of supporting characters, each contributing to the emotional depth of the story. One notable character is Jackie, who represents a complex young woman shaped by her beauty and neurodivergent traits. Dempsey acknowledges the challenge of writing female characters, stating, “There are a billion ways I could go wrong, and no doubt I have.”
Dempsey’s influences extend beyond personal experiences; his love for opera and various literary figures shaped the novel’s narrative style. He cites “Pygmalion” and works by authors such as Charles Dickens and Virginia Woolf as significant inspirations that guided his writing process. Additionally, the story is peppered with musical references that highlight his deep-rooted passion for opera.
The writing process itself was a journey for Dempsey. He dedicated three months to drafting the novel before stepping away for six months, returning for revisions shaped by his travels and reflections. He noted, “The writing of the book was not difficult in terms of creating the story and characters,” emphasizing his natural inclination towards storytelling.
Dempsey’s commitment to the craft culminated in a narrative that delves into themes of injustice, personal growth, and the dichotomy between art and life. He expressed hope that writing “Anthony’s Aria” allowed him to confront his own philosophies and even helped him heal from personal loss.
Looking forward, Dempsey is already working on multiple projects, including a second novel titled “Perfidious Albert – The Story of a Saxon Psychopath” and a collaborative work with his nephew. As he continues to explore new creative avenues, he remains grounded in his roots, eager to share stories that resonate with audiences.
Dempsey’s “Anthony’s Aria” is published by Boann Books and Media and is available for readers looking to experience a unique blend of music, culture, and emotional depth. The novel represents not just a new chapter in Dempsey’s artistic journey but also a testament to the enduring power of storytelling.
