Taste of Belgium Files for Bankruptcy, Shrinks to Three Locations

The future of the breakfast chain Taste of Belgium is uncertain following its bankruptcy filing in January 2024. Once a beloved establishment with multiple locations, the chain has seen a significant decline, shrinking its footprint to just three restaurants in Cincinnati, Ohio. This dramatic downturn comes after a period of expansion in the 2010s, when the brand transformed from a single waffle stand at a local farmers’ market to a popular dining option.

Founded in 2007, Taste of Belgium gained popularity for its unique offerings, including traditional Belgian chicken, waffles, and a selection of American dishes with a Belgian twist. At its peak, the chain operated over ten locations across Ohio and Kentucky. Unfortunately, financial challenges have led to the closure of nearly all its outlets in Kentucky and most in Ohio, including the original full-service restaurant in Cincinnati’s Over-the-Rhine district.

In its bankruptcy filing, Taste of Belgium listed approximately $2.65 million in debts. The company cited several contributing factors to its financial woes, including the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, evolving consumer preferences, inflation, and changes in local foot traffic. Despite these challenges, the restaurant chain has expressed a commitment to long-term stability rather than an intention to cease operations.

In a message to customers, the chain reassured patrons, stating, “We’re OPEN. Taste of Belgium has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection so we can keep moving forward.” The company emphasized that its menu has returned to its roots, with all dishes prepared from scratch, and invited former customers to revisit.

“If you haven’t been in a while, we’d love to welcome you back. Our teams are ready to take care of you,” the chain added. This optimistic outlook contrasts with the reality many restaurants face in the current economic climate.

Broader Implications for Casual Dining Chains

The struggles of Taste of Belgium are not isolated. In Dallas, Texas, the local chain The Biscuit Bar closed all of its six remaining locations just days before Christmas 2025. Owners Janie and Jake Burkett cited similar financial difficulties, including rising costs and supply chain issues, which they described as “pressures no small business was prepared to endure.”

Despite efforts to secure a future for their employees and a deal with a reputable restaurant group that ultimately fell through, the Burketts had to make the difficult decision to close their restaurants. In a heartfelt message, they noted, “Just days before Christmas, we were forced to make the most painful decision of our lives.” They have since launched a GoFundMe campaign to support their displaced staff.

The challenges facing Taste of Belgium and The Biscuit Bar are indicative of a broader trend affecting casual dining establishments. Even well-established chains are struggling to adapt to a rapidly changing commercial environment. As inflation and operational costs rise, many beloved restaurants are finding it increasingly difficult to remain viable.
