Sullivan County Library Offers Exciting Events for All Ages

The Sullivan County Public Library is set to engage the community with a variety of events for children, families, and adults across its five branches. These activities aim to foster creativity, learning, and social interaction, making the library a vibrant hub for residents.

Children and Teen Activities

A range of programs tailored for young audiences will take place throughout the week. On Tuesday at 10:30 a.m., infants and their caregivers can attend the Baby Bookworms Sing and Play Storytime at the Bloomingdale branch. Later that day, at 4 p.m., the Thomas Memorial branch will host the Magic Tree House Book Club, kicking off discussions on “Sunset of the Sabertooth,” with no prior registration required.

On Wednesday at 1:30 p.m., children aged 8-12 can join the Children’s Classics Book Club at the Colonial Heights branch, featuring a reading and discussion of “The Indian in the Cupboard.” Then, on Thursday at 1:30 p.m., Daniel will lead a session on cryptozoology, exploring mysterious creatures believed to inhabit the world’s forests and lakes.

Additionally, the Kids’ Chess Club will meet at the Bloomingdale branch on Thursday at 3:30 p.m., welcoming elementary and middle school students. That same day, participants can also visit with Annie the Therapy Dog at 4 p.m. for reading practice or simply to enjoy a calming dog-petting session; advance registration is required.

The week culminates with various activities, including another Magic Tree House Book Club meeting at the Blountville branch on Friday at 1 p.m. and an Art History lesson focusing on Mark Rothko at 2 p.m.

Family and Adult Programs

Family-friendly events also abound, starting with an all-ages recycled stained glass craft at the Sullivan Gardens branch on Tuesday at 4 p.m. Participants will create faux stained glass art using plastic, glue, and paint.

On November 10, adults can participate in a free bingo game at the Bloomingdale branch at 4 p.m., designed for those aged 12 and older. Later that evening, renowned retired Bays Mountain Planetarium Director, Mike Chesman, will host an outdoor astronomy program at the Colonial Heights branch at 6:30 p.m., offering insights into the fall night sky.

Seniors will benefit from the Geri-Fit program, available at the Blountville branch on Mondays and Thursdays at 10 a.m., along with Chair Yoga sessions at various branches throughout the week. A special session on “Identifying Scams” will be conducted on Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the Blountville branch, led by Detective Jared Glover from the Sullivan County Sheriff’s Department. This session will provide critical information on recognizing current phone and internet scams targeting seniors.

The week’s activities conclude with an interactive trivia night at the Sullivan Gardens branch on November 14, themed around National Novel Writing Month.
