Authors Walk Out of Bay Area School Over Censorship Demands
BREAKING: Authors Joanna Ho and Caroline Kusin-Pritchard abruptly left Country Club Elementary School minutes before their scheduled presentation on October 17, 2023, after being asked by the San Ramon Valley Unified School District to censor their discussion on book banning. The authors were touring the Bay Area to promote their book, “The Day the Books Disappeared,” which tackles critical themes surrounding censorship and book banning.
Officials from the district expressed concerns over certain content in their presentation, stating it was not suitable for younger students in transitional kindergarten to third grade, ages 4 to 9. They insisted that the authors avoid discussing book banning, claiming it overshadowed the book’s overarching messages of kindness and empathy.
In response, Kusin-Pritchard voiced her frustration, stating,
“Book banning is real, it’s happening everywhere, it’s happening in California.”
Ho added,
“Caroline was like this is completely out of our integrity like, we won’t be changing our presentation if we’re giving the presentation.”
Faced with the district’s demands, the authors decided to walk out rather than alter their message. The district had previously reached out to the organization coordinating their visit, requesting adjustments for younger audiences, but received no response before making a direct request to the authors upon their arrival.
Despite the controversy, Kusin-Pritchard highlighted the positive reception their book has received from thousands of students nationwide. She noted that children have shown powerful insights and hopeful reactions when engaging with the story.
Ho emphasized the importance of discussing why books can be banned, addressing uncomfortable historical truths, race, and diverse family structures. She stressed the necessity of bringing such stories to light to foster awareness and intentionality within communities.
This incident underscores ongoing national debates about censorship in education and the importance of open discussions in schools. As this story develops, it raises critical questions about the balance between age-appropriate content and the right to discuss significant societal issues.
Stay tuned for further updates on this evolving story, as reactions from educators, parents, and literary advocates begin to unfold.
