Blue Jays’ Trey Yesavage Sets Rookie Record with 12 Strikeouts
UPDATE: In a stunning performance, Trey Yesavage shattered the World Series rookie strikeout record with 12 strikeouts as the Toronto Blue Jays triumphed over the Los Angeles Dodgers 6-1 in Game 5 on November 1, 2023. This victory places Toronto just one win away from clinching its first championship since 1993.
The Blue Jays opened the game with a historic bang, hitting back-to-back home runs by Davis Schneider and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. on the first two pitches from Dodgers pitcher Blake Snell. This marks the first time consecutive homers have started a World Series game, igniting a fervor among the fans at Dodger Stadium.
Yesavage, a remarkable 22-year-old right-hander, dominated the mound, allowing only three hits over seven innings. He broke the previous rookie record of 11 strikeouts, set by Don Newcombe in 1949, becoming the first pitcher in Series history to achieve 12 strikeouts without issuing a single walk.
“Just need to get in the strike zone,” Yesavage stated in a post-game interview with Fox. “When three of my pitches are in the strike zone, I’m in control.”
This impressive outing included six strikeouts each with his splitter and slider, and a staggering 23 swing-and-misses, the highest recorded in a Series game since pitch tracking began in 2008.
Despite a valiant effort, Snell fell to 0-2 in the Series, surrendering five runs and six hits over 6 2/3 innings. The Dodgers’ lineup struggled significantly, with their top four hitters—Shohei Ohtani, Will Smith, Mookie Betts, and Freddie Freeman—combining for just 1-for-15 with eight strikeouts.
The Blue Jays now have a chance to dethrone the defending champions when the Series resumes at Rogers Centre on November 3. With no team having won back-to-back titles since the Yankees’ three-peat from 1998 to 2000, all eyes are on Toronto as they inch closer to a historic win.
In addition to Schneider and Guerrero’s explosive start, Ernie Clement added a sacrifice fly to extend the lead, while Teoscar Hernandez and Isiah Kiner-Falefa contributed key RBIs, illustrating the Blue Jays’ depth in this pivotal game.
As the Blue Jays prepare for Game 6, they will look to Kevin Gausman on the mound, facing off against the Dodgers’ Yoshinobu Yamamoto, in a rematch of Game 2, which the Dodgers won 5-1. With the stakes higher than ever, the excitement surrounding this World Series is palpable.
Stay tuned for more updates as Toronto aims for what could be a historic championship victory!
