Tyon Grant-Foster Secures Injunction to Play for Gonzaga Bulldogs
BREAKING: Gonzaga forward Tyon Grant-Foster has been granted a preliminary injunction by a Spokane County judge, allowing him to play for the Bulldogs during the upcoming season. This critical ruling comes just days after the NCAA denied his eligibility waiver appeal, creating significant implications for the Bulldogs as they prepare for the season opener on November 3, 2023, against Texas Southern.
The judge’s decision marks a pivotal moment for Grant-Foster, who faced a complex eligibility battle. Originally part of the 2018 high school class, he played two seasons at Indian Hills Community College before transferring to Kansas, where he participated in 22 games during the 2020-21 season. After a brief stint with DePaul, Grant-Foster suffered a medical crisis; he collapsed in the locker room during halftime of his first game in the 2021-22 season, resulting in multiple heart surgeries and a 16-month recovery.
Remarkably, Grant-Foster returned to the court with the Grand Canyon Lopes, showcasing a stunning comeback by averaging 20.1 points and 6.1 rebounds, and earning the title of WAC Player of the Year. He led his team to the NCAA tournament, achieving the program’s first-ever tournament victory over Saint Mary’s.
The NCAA’s initial ruling considered Grant-Foster’s time at Indian Hills and Grand Canyon as part of his four years of eligibility. However, his legal team argued that a blanket waiver provided last December to former junior college transfers should grant him an additional year. The court’s decision today allows him to join his teammates, including preseason All-WCC first-teamers Graham Ike and Braden Huff, on the floor.
Following the ruling, Grant-Foster rushed to Gonzaga’s exhibition game against Western Oregon, which kicked off less than an hour later, highlighting the urgency and excitement surrounding his eligibility. This development not only impacts Grant-Foster but also elevates Gonzaga’s prospects as they seek to strengthen their roster ahead of the new season.
As the Bulldogs gear up for a highly anticipated season, all eyes will be on Grant-Foster as he looks to make a significant impact on the court. Fans are eager to see how his journey unfolds, especially after overcoming such substantial personal challenges.
Stay tuned for more updates as Gonzaga prepares for their season opener and Grant-Foster’s anticipated contributions to the team.
