Top-30 Guard Marcus Johnson Decommits from Ohio State NOW
BREAKING: Top-30 senior Marcus Johnson has officially decommitted from Ohio State, a decision he announced on Monday, October 23, 2023. This shocking development comes more than 18 months after he first committed to the Buckeyes in April 2024.
The 6-foot-2 guard from Garfield Heights High School in Ohio was a key recruit for the Buckeyes under new head coach Jake Diebler, who took over following the departure of Chris Holtmann. Johnson was Diebler’s first major recruit, and his decision to decommit raises significant questions about the Buckeyes’ recruiting strategy moving forward.
Johnson, ranked No. 28 in the SC Next 100 for the class of 2026, has made waves in the basketball world. He was named Mr. Basketball in Ohio last spring after an incredible junior season, averaging 29.7 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 4.7 assists. His performance on the Nike EYBL circuit with the Indy Heat grassroots program further established him as one of the most talented offensive guards, where he averaged 19.0 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 3.0 assists across 15 games.
Johnson’s decommitment comes just a week after Ohio State secured a commitment from five-star senior Anthony Thompson, the highest-ranked men’s basketball recruit for the program in over a decade. Thompson, ranked No. 13 nationally, opted for the Buckeyes over Indiana, joining fellow Ohio native four-star Alex Smith in the 2026 recruiting class. The addition of Thompson may have influenced Johnson’s decision to reassess his commitment.
The timing of Johnson’s announcement has left many fans and analysts speculating about the future of Ohio State basketball. Johnson, whose father, Sonny Johnson, was named Mr. Basketball in Ohio in 1998, has deep roots in the state and his decommitment marks a pivotal moment for the Buckeyes as they aim to build a competitive team.
As this situation develops, all eyes will be on Johnson to see where he may land next and how Ohio State will respond to this unexpected turn of events. Will they be able to secure additional talent to fill the void left by Johnson? Stay tuned for updates as this story unfolds.
