Ben Stiller candidly discussed the emotional challenges he faced during his separation from Christine Taylor in his recent documentary, *Stiller & Meara: Nothing Is Lost*, released on October 17, 2023. The actor revealed that comparing his relationship struggles to his parents’ enduring marriage made him feel as though he was “failing.”

The couple, who had been married for 17 years before their separation in 2017, experienced a tumultuous period that Stiller describes as marked by an “aversion” to collaborating on projects. In the documentary, he reflected on the pressures of both personal and professional life, stating, “When we separated, my feeling was, like, ‘Oh, I’m failing at this and look at my parents. They have this incredible 60 plus years of marriage and I can’t live up to that.’”

Stiller and Taylor reconciled in early 2022, with Stiller expressing their happiness in an interview with *Esquire*. He acknowledged the significant effort and reflection required to restore their relationship.

As they explored the complexities of their marriage and professional collaborations, Taylor noted the challenges that came from being together so closely in both aspects of their lives. “It can put extra strain when you’re eating, sleeping, breathing each other in that way,” she said. Stiller agreed, adding that he felt pressure to avoid repeating patterns from his own upbringing.

Growing up in a show business family, with his father, Jerry Stiller, and mother, Anne Meara, both successful actors, shaped his perspective on relationships. Jerry Stiller passed away in 2020 at age 92, while Anne Meara died in 2015 at age 85. Their 61-year marriage left a lasting impression on Stiller, who recalled his mother’s advice about prioritizing family amidst a busy career.

Stiller expressed concerns regarding his own parental role, particularly regarding his children, Ella, 23, and Quin, 20. He admitted that work often took precedence over family time, echoing sentiments shared by Taylor about the difficulty of balancing personal and professional commitments.

During the documentary, the couple reflected on their journey, with Taylor recalling advice from Meara during challenging times. Meara encouraged her to avoid pretending that difficulties were not affecting her, emphasizing the importance of voicing one’s feelings. Taylor recalled, “I remember Anne pulled me aside, like, ‘Take care of you.’ She had my back — and you were her son!”

The documentary premiered at the New York Film Festival on October 5, 2023, where Stiller’s openness about his personal struggles resonated with audiences. He candidly recounted feelings of being out of balance and disconnected from his family during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“My career had been going along for a long time but things actually weren’t great in my personal life,” he stated. Reflecting on the pressures he witnessed in his parents’ relationship, Stiller sought to understand how they navigated their challenges and remained together through difficult times.

As Stiller and Taylor continue to work on their relationship, their story serves as a reminder of the complexities of love, family, and the pursuit of personal happiness amid public scrutiny.
