UPDATE: The Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) has confirmed that all northern sites will be stocked with rainbow trout just in time for the highly anticipated trout opener on Saturday, October 18. This news comes after statewide stocking delays caused by unusually warm fall temperatures, a trend increasingly noted in recent years due to climate change.

Thanks to a significant drop in temperatures, IDNR officials have successfully prepared numerous locations for anglers eager for the opening day. The stocked sites include several popular fishing spots across multiple counties:

– **Cook County**: Axehead, Belleau, Busse Woods North, Green, Horsetail, Sag Quarry East, and Wolf Lake at William W. Powers State Recreation Area.
– **DuPage County**: Grove, Pickerel, Silver.
– **Kankakee County**: Bird Park Quarry, Rock Creek at Kankakee River State Park.
– **Kendall County**: Big Lake at Silver Springs State Fish and Wildlife Area.
– **Lake County**: Sand Lake at Illinois Beach State Park.
– **McHenry County**: Spring Grove Hatchery Pond, Lake Atwood.
– **Will County**: Lake Strini, Van Horn Woods.

Anglers should be prepared, as a fishing license and an inland trout stamp are required to participate. The daily bag limit has been set at five fish, ensuring that fishing enthusiasts can enjoy a productive day on the water.

While the IDNR has made significant strides in stocking northern sites, they have also announced that 14 Downstate waters will not be stocked before the opener. This development has raised concerns among local anglers who were hoping for a broader range of fishing opportunities.

As excitement builds for the trout opener, fishermen are urged to check the IDNR website for the most up-to-date information regarding specific locations and regulations. With the season kicking off soon, this is the perfect time for anglers to gear up and head out to their favorite fishing spots.

Stay tuned for more updates as the trout opener approaches—this is an event that many have been waiting for, and the opportunity to catch fresh trout is just around the corner!
