Max Scherzer Set to Start Game 4 as Blue Jays Face Elimination
UPDATE: The Toronto Blue Jays are banking on the fiery spirit of Max Scherzer as he prepares to take the mound for Game 4 of the AL Championship Series against the Seattle Mariners tonight. Scherzer, who hasn’t pitched since September 24, 2025, is determined to lead his team in a must-win situation, stating, “I love it. This is what you play for.”
The stakes are high for the Blue Jays, who lost the first two games of the series at home. They must secure at least two victories in Seattle to keep their championship dreams alive. Scherzer’s postseason experience is invaluable; this will mark his 26th postseason start and 31st appearance. Despite being a three-time Cy Young Award winner, Scherzer is facing pressure after struggling in his last eight postseason outings, holding an 0-3 record since the 2019 World Series.
Scherzer and fellow right-hander Chris Bassitt were added to Toronto’s roster after missing the Division Series against the Yankees. Bassitt, who pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings in relief during Monday’s 10-3 loss to the Mariners, believes Scherzer will rise to the occasion. “I expect Max to be Max,” Bassitt affirmed, emphasizing the need for high-level execution.
Scherzer’s recent performance has raised concerns. He posted a 5-5 record with a 5.19 ERA in 17 starts this season, a stark contrast to his illustrious career. He admitted that neck pain hindered him toward the end of the regular season, and he had previously been sidelined due to right thumb inflammation. Despite these setbacks, Scherzer remains optimistic: “When I take the mound, I have the attitude that I’m going to win no matter what.”
With the pressure mounting, the Blue Jays are relying on Scherzer’s tenacity to turn the tide. The team has demonstrated resilience throughout the season, with numerous comeback victories. Scherzer stated, “We’ve played great ball. Yes, we lost two games. We all understand what’s at stake.”
Tonight’s game begins at 7:07 PM PT in Seattle, and fans are eagerly anticipating a pivotal performance from Scherzer. With the Blue Jays’ postseason hopes hanging in the balance, Scherzer’s fire and experience could be the key to extending their season.
