Lions GM Discusses Uncertain Future of David Montgomery
The future of running back David Montgomery with the Detroit Lions remains uncertain as general manager Brad Holmes indicated potential changes ahead. Despite Montgomery’s contract extending through 2027, his role has diminished this season, leading to speculation about his future in Detroit as the team prepares for the 2026 season.
Montgomery and rookie teammate Jahmyr Gibbs have formed a notable running back duo since their arrival in 2023. However, Gibbs has emerged as the primary back, significantly reducing Montgomery’s touches. In the 2024 season, Montgomery’s carries decreased to 158 over 17 games, down from 185 in 14 games the previous year. Meanwhile, Gibbs has surpassed 1,200 yards in rushing for two consecutive seasons, while Montgomery has struggled to reach 800 yards in each of the last two campaigns.
Holmes acknowledged the challenges Montgomery faced this past season, stating, “I obviously know this was a tough year for him in terms of the lack of touches. I’m not gonna say that we went into planning for it to be that way.” He emphasized the need for further discussions regarding Montgomery’s future, revealing, “Those are discussions that we’re gonna have to have a lot more in-depth in terms of what is the best plan for him going forward.”
The general manager expressed appreciation for Montgomery’s contributions, noting, “I hope it doesn’t [end up going that way] because we love David Montgomery. He’s a good football player.” He added that both he and head coach Dan Campbell feel Montgomery deserves an opportunity to showcase his skills more effectively.
This season, Montgomery averaged 4.5 yards per carry, showcasing his potential as a lead back for other teams should he choose to leave Detroit. At 28 years old, he may not possess the same upside as the younger Gibbs, but his experience could prove valuable in a different offensive scheme.
As the Lions navigate their offseason, Montgomery’s status will be one of several critical decisions. The organization is also focused on finding a new offensive coordinator and addressing the offensive line, indicating a busy period ahead as they aim to strengthen their team for the upcoming season.
