Nuggets Thrive Without Nikola Jokic as Key Players Step Up
The Denver Nuggets faced a significant challenge when star center Nikola Jokic suffered a knee injury during a game against the Miami Heat on December 29, 2023. Fortunately, the injury was diagnosed as a hyperextension, which is expected to keep Jokic off the court for approximately four weeks. In his absence, the Nuggets have had to rely on the contributions of other players, leading to an impressive performance as they have won three of their last five games.
With Jokic sidelined, Jamal Murray has taken on an even larger role. Over the past four games, Murray has excelled, averaging 26.0 points, 6.8 rebounds, and 11.5 assists per game. His ability to lead the team during this tough stretch has strengthened his case for a potential first career All-Star appearance. As the primary playmaker, Murray is proving his mettle and showcasing why he is considered one of the top point guards in the NBA. With Jokic likely out for three more weeks, Murray’s continued performance will be crucial for the Nuggets.
In addition to Murray’s contributions, the Nuggets have found a surprising ally in Peyton Watson. At just 23 years old, Watson is in a contract year and is making a strong case for a new deal with the team. In the five games following Jokic’s injury, Watson has averaged 24.4 points, 5.8 rebounds, 2.2 assists, and 2.0 stocks (a combination of steals and blocks) per game. His shooting has been particularly impressive, hitting 51.8% from the field and 41.4% from three-point range. Watson’s recent performance includes a standout 30-point game against the Boston Celtics, further solidifying his role as a key offensive contributor alongside Murray.
Another player who has stepped up significantly is sixth-year forward Zeke Nnaji. With both Jokic and Jonas Valanciunas out, Nnaji has emerged as a vital component of the Nuggets’ rotation. Although he began the season as a secondary player, Nnaji has made a noticeable impact in his recent appearances. In his last four games, he has averaged 12.5 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 3.0 stocks in just under 25 minutes of play. Nnaji’s defensive contributions include two blocks in each of his last three games and a total of seven steals, demonstrating his value on both ends of the court.
The Nuggets are fortunate to have these players stepping up during a challenging time. As they navigate the absence of Jokic, the contributions from Murray, Watson, and Nnaji have been crucial in maintaining the team’s competitive edge. The hope remains that Jokic can return to the lineup soon, but for now, the Denver Nuggets are proving their depth and resilience in the face of adversity.
