Amazon’s $11 Billion Data Center Sparks Heated Debate in Hobart
UPDATE: A proposed $11 billion Amazon data center near Hobart, Indiana has ignited intense debate, as residents express urgent concerns over health and environmental impacts. The City Council’s unanimous approval on Wednesday night followed a heated public meeting, where nearly all speakers voiced strong opposition to the project, which is planned for a 700-acre site near Colorado and 61st Avenue, directly across from a residential community.
Residents packed the meeting, raising alarms about the potential long-term damage the data center could inflict on their health and environment. “I’m scared once this is built there will be no way to undo the damage,” one resident stated. “I’m scared of losing my health and the place I’m supposed to be safe.”
Many residents criticized the City Council for a perceived lack of transparency regarding the project. They urged officials to delay the vote, demanding more time for community discussion. “Please do not rush into something that could damage our city,” another resident implored.
In support of the data center, Hobart Mayor Josh Huddlestun emphasized the project’s potential benefits. In a recent Facebook post, he highlighted that the agreement would prevent income tax increases and allow for reinvestment in city development. The project is anticipated to create over 400 permanent jobs and bring millions of dollars in revenue to Hobart, contingent on meeting construction milestones.
If approved, construction could commence as early as this spring, bringing both excitement and trepidation to the community. As the situation develops, residents are left to grapple with the implications of this massive project on their lives and environment.
Stay tuned for more updates as local officials continue to navigate this contentious issue.
