Duxbury Girls’ Hockey Falls After Reaching No. 1 Spot; Milestones Highlight Action-Packed Day

UPDATE: In a shocking twist, the Duxbury girls’ hockey team has lost its first game after being elevated to the No. 1 spot in the Globe’s Top 20 rankings, falling 3-2 to Nauset/Monomoy. The game, played on Wednesday, was one of over 200 matches held throughout Eastern Massachusetts, showcasing incredible talent and intense competition.

This surprising defeat matters NOW, as it underlines the unpredictability of high school sports, especially following Duxbury’s recent rise to the top. The Warriors of Nauset, despite entering the match with a 2-5-0 record, demonstrated resilience and skill that stunned Duxbury. Coach Zach Wells emphasized, “It’s not about where we start the season, as long as you’re getting better every game.”

In addition to this upset, Wednesday’s action was marked by significant milestones. In wrestling, Melrose seniors Jack Shea and Scott Santos both achieved their 100th career wins during a dominating 62-17 victory over Burlington. Coach Larry Tremblay praised their leadership, stating, “They didn’t look like they were gonna be special, but they hit open mats… That’s the key.”

The day also celebrated remarkable individual achievements in hockey and basketball. Junior Violet Lorusso reached her 100th career point for Shawsheen/Bedford/Lowell girls’ hockey in a thrilling 5-4 win over Wayland/Weston. Similarly, Woburn junior Savannah Powers scored her 100th point in an overtime victory against Winchester.

On the boys’ side, Logan Bowen of Beverly boys’ hockey tallied two goals and an assist, marking his own milestone with 100 career points in a 5-3 win over Marblehead.

The day was rife with overtime excitement, particularly in girls’ hockey, where Melrose edged Burlington 2-1 on Anna Matthews’ winner, and Wakefield triumphed over Stoneham/Wilmington with a 3-2 score, thanks to Paige Eriksen’s swift goal just 38 seconds into OT.

In a notable boys’ basketball matchup, Avon senior Thomas Edwards became the ninth player in program history to score 1,000 career points, a feat he achieved in a 56-33 victory over Tri-County, finishing with 29 points.
