Texans’ Leki Fotu Steps Up as Key Player for Playoff Push
The Houston Texans have welcomed defensive tackle Leki Fotu to their roster at a crucial moment in the season. With significant injuries sidelining key players Tim Settle Jr. and Mario Edwards Jr., Fotu’s arrival provides much-needed depth to the Texans’ interior defensive line. Standing at 6 feet 5 inches and weighing 317 pounds, Fotu joined the Texans after being released by the Las Vegas Raiders earlier in the season.
Fotu was initially signed to the Texans’ practice squad but has quickly made his mark. He has been elevated to the active roster for the last two games, contributing to a team preparing for the upcoming AFC wild-card playoff game against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Monday night. “I’m still catching all the emotions, but truly we’re just grateful to be in this position,” Fotu told KPRC 2. “With my size and abilities, I think it speaks for itself. I try to provide that anchor in the run game and contribute my part in the passing game.”
In his debut, Fotu recorded two tackles during a victory over the Los Angeles Chargers and added another tackle in a win against the Indianapolis Colts, participating in 49 percent of the defensive snaps. The Texans have since solidified their roster by also elevating safety Kaevon Merriweather.
Fotu, who was drafted in the fourth round by the Arizona Cardinals, has experience with the New York Jets and the Raiders. Reuniting with Texans defensive coordinator Matt Burke, who previously coached Fotu in Arizona, has been a significant factor in his seamless integration into the team’s 4-3 defensive scheme. “It’s a great feeling,” Fotu expressed. “Just to reconnect with him and be a part of this defense is truly amazing.”
Over his career, Fotu has played in 66 games, starting in 25, and has tallied 103 tackles, 4.5 sacks, 15 tackles for loss, and eight quarterback hits, along with one forced fumble. His collegiate performance earned him two first-team All-Pac-12 selections, and he recorded a 40-yard dash time of 5.15 seconds.
Fotu’s connection to the Texans extends beyond his current teammates. He recently caught up with J.J. Watt, a former star with the Texans, during practice. “Always great to see him,” Fotu remarked. “I tried to take some of his stuff and mimic it into my own game. Definitely learned a lot during our time in Arizona.”
As the Texans gear up for a pivotal playoff match, Fotu’s contributions could prove essential in their quest for postseason success. His size, experience, and familiarity with the coaching staff position him as a key player in the upcoming challenge against the Steelers.
