German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has prioritized the enhancement of Germany’s economy as a critical objective for 2026, expressing concerns over the current economic landscape. In a letter to members of his governing coalition, which was disclosed at the beginning of the year, he indicated that existing measures have not adequately bolstered the nation’s competitiveness. The letter, referenced by the German news agency dpa, describes the economic situation as “very critical in some areas.”

To address these challenges, Merz emphasized the necessity for decisive political and legislative actions in 2026. He believes that without such measures, Germany will struggle to return to growth and overcome its current economic crisis. The Chancellor’s message highlights a sense of urgency in tackling the issues that are hindering business conditions across the country.

Continued Support for Ukraine

In addition to economic concerns, Merz reaffirmed Germany’s unwavering support for Ukraine amid its ongoing conflict with Russia. He noted that the decision to utilize Russian assets frozen within the European Union has established a financial foundation for sustaining support to Ukraine’s defense efforts. “Russia must have no doubt about our resolve,” the Chancellor stated, underscoring Germany’s commitment to aiding Ukraine.

At the same time, Merz reiterated the importance of pursuing a ceasefire that maintains Ukraine’s sovereignty. He acknowledged the complexities of diplomatic negotiations, pointing to the challenges posed by Russia’s limited willingness to engage in talks and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s efforts to maintain national unity.

Restoring Trust in Politics

In his closing remarks, Merz called on lawmakers to restore public confidence in political institutions by providing tangible solutions to pressing issues. He articulated that demonstrating the effectiveness of democracy and a market-oriented economy is essential for winning the support of the majority. “This is how we will also convince the vast majority of our population of the value of our democracy and our market-based economic system,” he wrote.

The Chancellor’s letter outlines a clear agenda for the coming months, indicating that both economic revitalization and international support for Ukraine will be at the forefront of Germany’s political strategy. As the nation navigates these challenges, the focus will remain on fostering a resilient economy while simultaneously fulfilling its international obligations.
