Protests in Iran Claim At Least 10 Lives Amid Government Crackdown
Violence erupted across Iran this weekend, resulting in the deaths of at least 10 people during widespread protests against the government. Demonstrators voiced their frustrations over economic hardships and the declining value of the national currency, the rial. Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei indicated a forthcoming crackdown on dissent, stating, “Rioters must be put in their place,” during a televised address on September 30, 2023.
The recent unrest is the most significant wave of protests in Iran since the demonstrations following the death of Mahsa Amini in September 2022. Amini died in police custody after her arrest for allegedly violating hijab regulations. The current protests have spread to over 100 locations across 22 of Iran’s 31 provinces, as reported by the Human Rights Activists News Agency based in the United States.
Economic discontent fueled the protests, particularly concerns about the collapsing currency. Many demonstrators have expressed their anger not only at the deteriorating economic situation but also at the Islamic Republic itself. Khamenei attributed the unrest to foreign interference, claiming that external adversaries were inciting violence and unrest among the populace. He accused “a bunch of people incited or hired by the enemy” of fomenting discord among traders and shopkeepers.
In a tragic turn, two individuals lost their lives during the unrest over the weekend. A grenade explosion in the holy city of Qom killed one man, who security officials claimed was preparing to launch an attack. In Harsin, an assailant killed a member of the Basij paramilitary force using firearms and knives.
The situation has escalated tensions with the United States. Former President Donald Trump issued a warning on September 29, 2023, stating that the U.S. would take action if Iran “violently kills peaceful protesters.” Iranian officials reacted strongly, threatening U.S. military personnel stationed in the Middle East.
Iran’s security forces have a notorious history of responding violently to protests. The crackdown during the demonstrations in 2019 resulted in over 300 deaths, while the response to the protests following Amini’s death left more than 500 dead. As the latest protests continue, the international community watches closely, concerned about the potential for further violence and loss of life in Iran.
