Maduro and Wife Captured, Arrive in New York for Trial

Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, arrived at Stewart Air National Guard Base, just north of New York City, on Saturday afternoon. Their arrival followed a U.S. military operation in Caracas that resulted in their capture overnight from their home. The couple was first taken to the USS Iwo Jima warship before being flown to New York to face serious criminal charges.

According to sources familiar with the situation, Maduro and Flores are expected to be held at the Metropolitan Detention Center, a federal facility located in Brooklyn. A superseding indictment filed in the Southern District of New York accuses Maduro, along with members of his family and cabinet, of conspiracy to commit narco-terrorism and to import cocaine into the United States.

During a press conference, U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi stated, “They will soon face the full wrath of American justice on American soil in American courts.” The charges outlined in the indictment are consistent with those previously filed against Maduro and several key aides in 2020. The indictment details a long history of corruption, asserting that “for over 25 years, leaders of Venezuela have abused their positions of public trust” to facilitate drug trafficking.

The U.S. government alleges that Maduro has played a pivotal role in this corruption, using his authority to transport significant quantities of cocaine into the United States. The indictment claims that he has partnered with various co-conspirators to achieve these illicit activities.

In addition to Maduro, the indictment also implicates Flores in her husband’s alleged crimes. It is claimed that she facilitated a meeting between a major drug trafficker and Nestor Reverol Torres, the director of Venezuela’s National Anti-Drug Office. Prosecutors allege that Flores accepted hundreds of thousands of dollars in bribes in 2007, including a scheme where Reverol Torres received $100,000 per flight in exchange for allowing cocaine shipments.

Reverol Torres had previously been indicted by U.S. prosecutors in 2015. The allegations against Maduro and senior officials include collaboration with the Colombian guerrilla group Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia (FARC) to traffic cocaine and weapons into the U.S. Maduro has consistently denied these accusations, which have drawn international scrutiny.

Following the operation, former President Donald Trump indicated that the United States would temporarily manage Venezuela and its vast oil reserves to sell to other nations.
