UConn Women’s Basketball Dominates Providence 90-53 Despite Arnold’s Absence
The UConn women’s basketball team secured a decisive 90-53 victory over Providence on March 15, 2024, showcasing their depth and resilience in the absence of starting point guard KK Arnold, who missed the game due to a nasal fracture. The win, held at the Amica Mutual Pavilion, reinforces the Huskies’ status as the number one team in the nation.
Strong Performance Leads the Charge
Sophomore Sarah Strong emerged as a standout player, contributing 17 points, seven rebounds, and three steals. Strong’s shooting was particularly impressive, as she made five of seven attempts from beyond the arc, helping the team achieve a total of 12-for-26 from three-point range. This performance marks a new season best for Strong, who displayed great confidence early in the game.
The Huskies began the game strong, responding quickly after a brief deficit. After falling behind 4-3 early on, UConn went on a remarkable 27-3 run in the final minutes of the first quarter. Strong and fellow player Allie Ziebell, who made her first collegiate start in Arnold’s place, were instrumental in this momentum shift, with Ziebell also contributing nine points and three steals.
Defensive Prowess and Team Depth
UConn’s defensive efforts were relentless, forcing 30 turnovers and converting them into 41 points. Despite the team’s own struggles with ball control, evidenced by 21 turnovers, they managed to limit Providence to only eight points off those mistakes. The Huskies’ ability to maintain pressure on defense while adjusting to a new lineup was a key factor in their victory.
While Arnold’s absence was felt, the backcourt adapted well. Azzi Fudd led the team with six assists and added 18 points, demonstrating her versatility. UConn utilized a shorter bench, with only eight players participating through the first three quarters, but continued to showcase depth as players stepped up. Freshman Blanca Quinonez scored 11 points and provided a much-needed spark, finishing the game with four assists and two steals.
As the match progressed, fatigue became evident, particularly in the third quarter where UConn allowed 16 points while shooting just 35% from the field. However, Quinonez’s late-game efforts, including a steal and score just before the end of the quarter, helped maintain the team’s lead.
The frontcourt also shone, with senior center Serah Williams delivering a solid performance with eight points, six rebounds, and five blocks, tying her career high. Redshirt sophomore Jana El Alfy played a season-high 19 minutes, contributing ten points and five rebounds, underscoring the effectiveness of the team’s rotation.
This victory against Providence further solidifies UConn’s strong position in the Big East and showcases their ability to overcome challenges. The Huskies will look to maintain their momentum as they progress through the season, demonstrating both skill and determination on the court.
