A unique blend of artistry and nostalgia is taking shape in Concord, California, where Mike Moretti has transformed his custom framing business, The Art of Picture Framing, into an engaging pinball hub known as The Flipper Room. This innovative venture began when a friend, who owned a demolition business, suggested Moretti consider acquiring a pinball machine for his breakroom. Initially hesitant due to the machine’s weight, Moretti later embraced the idea, leading to a remarkable evolution in his business.

Moretti’s journey into the world of pinball gained momentum after the passing of his friend, John. When John’s son inquired about the pinball machine, Moretti quickly agreed to bring it to life. “I think it’s a great idea,” he said, reflecting on the decision that would change the direction of his business.

Community Engagement and Growth

As the pinball machines became a hit with employees, Moretti expanded the offering. The space, initially serving as a framing studio, gradually invited more patronage as it was added to ‘The Pinball Map’, an online resource for pinball enthusiasts. What began with one machine quickly grew to two, and then to a collection that would rejuvenate the local pinball scene.

With a decline in his framing business, Moretti seized the opportunity to enhance The Flipper Room as a secondary source of income. “I have the space, I have the games, I have the drive,” he noted, recognizing the demand for such a venue. Acknowledging the importance of aesthetics, he emphasized that the presentation must reflect the quality of his framing work, ensuring a warm and inviting atmosphere for guests.

The response exceeded Moretti’s expectations. The Flipper Room soon became a community gathering spot, hosting tournaments, fundraisers, and a weekly league night. “I’m learning because of the community’s feedback,” he shared, highlighting how input on game selections and tournament formats has shaped the venue’s offerings.

Encouraging Future Generations

Moretti is also committed to fostering the next generation of pinball enthusiasts through The Little Flippers, a nonprofit program aimed at introducing children to the joys of pinball. “We’re trying to grow the hobby for generations to come,” he explained. His vision is to instill a love for the game in kids, hoping they will carry it forward with their own families.

Every pinball venue has its unique charm, and The Flipper Room is no exception, thanks to its resident feline, Spacer the Cat. “He’s here for the people,” Moretti said, adding a layer of warmth to the overall experience.

Moretti’s collection features machines spanning from the 1960s to modern designs, and he has maintained a traditional approach by operating the machines with coins. He relishes the nostalgia of watching children learn to count quarters during their visits. “They leave knowing what 25 cents is, 75 cents is, and what makes up a dollar,” he remarked, emphasizing the educational aspect of the experience.

As his businesses evolve, Moretti feels he has found his ideal balance. “All of the money we’ve been taking in, I’ve been reinvesting it in growth,” he said, expressing a desire to shift focus from expansion to personal happiness. “I think now is the time to get comfortable, find our niche in life, and be happy.”

With its vibrant atmosphere and community focus, The Flipper Room is redefining what a pinball venue can be, proving that the classic game can thrive in a modern setting while bringing joy to both young and old.
