Golden Globe Nominations Ignite Awards Season Buzz with Major Events
The Golden Globe nominations released on December 8, 2025, have created significant excitement in the film industry, showcasing a notably international and diverse selection of films. Leading the nominations is Paul Thomas Anderson’s “One Battle After Another,” which received an impressive nine nominations. Other strong contenders include “Sentimental Value,” “Sinners,” “Marty Supreme,” and “The Secret Agent.” In a surprising turn, films like “Jay Kelly” and “Wicked: For Good” missed out on nominations for Best Picture in the comedy category despite receiving multiple nods.
As the awards season heats up, the nominations from the Critics Choice Awards just days earlier set the stage for the Golden Globes. “Bugonia” secured a surprise nomination for Best Picture along with a nod for Emma Stone. Strong performances from Jacob Elordi in “Frankenstein” and Jessie Buckley in “Hamnet” have also gained traction, indicating their potential for awards recognition.
The week also featured the Los Angeles Film Critics Association awards, which saw Ethan Hawke honored for his role in “Blue Moon,” while Rose Byrne received accolades for “If I Had Legs I’d Kick You.” With three significant critics’ awards already won, Byrne is positioning herself as a frontrunner in the acting category as the National Society of Film Critics prepares to announce its awards in January.
Star-Studded Events Fuel Awards Buzz
The past week was filled with high-profile events aimed at building momentum for various films in contention. On December 2, Warner Bros. hosted a luncheon for Ryan Coogler’s “Sinners” at Manuela in Soho, New York. The gathering brought together a diverse group of filmmakers, actors, and industry influencers, including Coogler, Michael B. Jordan, and Delroy Lindo. This event underscored the cultural impact of the film and served as a strategic reminder to voters ahead of the upcoming nominations.
On December 7, Reba McEntire hosted a special screening of “Song Sung Blue” at the Directors Guild of America in Los Angeles. This event was part of the awards campaign for Craig Brewer’s musical drama, which has garnered positive buzz. Following the screening, McEntire led a Q&A with Brewer and stars Hugh Jackman and Kate Hudson. Hudson’s performance has recently gained attention, earning her a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress in a Comedy.
Meanwhile, Baz Luhrmann celebrated the Universal Pictures film “Wicked: For Good” on December 2 with a live performance and reception in Los Angeles. The night featured a showcase of the film’s original music and attracted industry voters and creatives alike. Charlize Theron attended, adding to the event’s star power and highlighting the film’s artistic achievements during this competitive awards season.
Emerging Contenders Gain Recognition
The documentary “Predators,” directed by David Osit, has emerged as a strong contender following its premiere at Sundance 2025. Distributed by MTV Documentary Films, the film currently holds a 98% Certified Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes and has resonated with both critics and audiences. Its growing acclaim positions it as a potential dark horse in the documentary awards category.
In addition, “Sentimental Value,” directed by Joachim Trier, continues to solidify its status with recent screenings and Q&As. A December 1 event at the Directors Guild of America featured a conversation with Trier and editor Olivier Bugge Coutté, moderated by Judd Apatow. The film’s campaign gained further traction with a screening in New York on December 3, where Trier was joined by co-stars Stellan Skarsgård, Renate Reinsve, and Elle Fanning. The presence of Sofia Coppola, who introduced the screening, added prestige and further support for the film.
As the awards season continues to unfold, these events and nominations serve as critical indicators of which films and performances are gaining traction among voters and critics alike. The path to the Oscars is becoming clearer, but the competition remains fierce as more contenders emerge from a vibrant and diverse field.
